ENID, OKLA. - In a tournament that featured numerous wins by lower-seeded teams, Madison College suffered a second consecutive setback on Sunday to end their stay at the
2023 NJCAA Division II World Series after just two games at
David Allen Memorial Ballpark. The third-seeded WolfPack were beaten 7-1 by ninth-seeded Glendale Community College in an elimination game, which also marked the third loss this season to the Gauchos and dropped the all-time series to 11-3 in favor GCC. The loss completes a 44-12 season record for the Pack.
Glendale (33-29) started fast two runners at the corners and one out after a pair of singles, and took advantage with a double off starter
Michael Carpenter that scored a run, and an error in left allowed another run to score.
The WolfPack, who stranded a runner at third in the first, plated their lone run in the second inning.
Payton Frehner led off with a walk and advanced to third on
Clayton Slack's single. Another walk to
Will Johannes loaded the bases and forced the Gauchos to make a pitching move. Sophomore
Carter Stebane then beat out an infield single to score Frehner.
It remained 2-1 into the sixth, when GCC when a WolfPack throwing error allowed a run to score, and a double by the next batter plated another run for a 4-1 differential.
Madison College threatened to cut into the deficit in the eighth with the bases loaded an two outs, however, a pitching change for Glendale slowed the momentum with the new arm striking out
Nick Nowak and
Carson Shepard to end the threat.
A sloppy top of the ninth defensively for Madison allowed the Gauchos to add three runs for a 7-1 lead. The first run came via a wild pitch that followed an error, and then a sacrifice fly pushed the differential to five. Another error on a double steal attempts accounted for the game's final run.
The Pack went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Madison College finished with five errors to match a season-worst, while also only producing seven hits. Three of those seven came from sophomore transfer
Clayton Slack, as the native of Viroqua, Wisconsin, went 3 for 4.
Stebane used his one hit to drive in the team's only run. Johannes, Shepard, and
Gabe Roessler had the other three hits, with Frehner picking up a run scored.
