PATTERSON POWER: Sophomore leads WolfPack in sweep of rival Bryant & Stratton

The winning pitcher in opener with five K's also smashes two homers, drives in seven runs

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team opened the final week of the regular season with a significant sweep of Region 4 and in-state rival Bryant & Stratton College on Tuesday at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The WolfPack rolled to a 12-4 win in six innings in game one, and held off the Bobcats for a 5-3 victory in the nightcap for their fourth consecutive win. Sophomore Kiana Patterson was the winning pitcher for the opener, and also crushed a pair of home runs with seven total runs batted in on the day. Madison now leads the all-time series by a 10-3 margin after snapping a three-game skid against BSC.

Game #1: Madison College 12, Bryant & Stratton College 4 (6 innings)

Kiana Patterson was in control from the opening pitch, as the righthander struck out the side in the top of the first, and then drove in Sammy Nelson with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half. She ran into some trouble in the third when the Bobcats hit a lead off home run to ignite a two-run frame with three hits.

Patterson, however, had a response of her own, and with a runner aboard and no out in the bottom half, smashed a 1-1 offering clear beyond the center field wall to put the Pack on top 3-2. Mackenna Schultz hit run-scoring triple later in the inning, which was capped by a sac fly from Makenna Gish to make it 5-2.

After three consecutive two-out hits led to two runs for BSC to make it a one-run differential, the Pack took advantage of a throwing error on a stolen base and a Karis Paulson single with a runner on third and two outs to make it 7-4 through four. Another run in the fifth helped put the home team in position to close the game out early, which they did in the bottom of the sixth.

With a runner aboard and two outs, Madison produced four straight run-scoring hits from Paulson, Schultz, Gish, and Sophie Rivera, who's double to left brought Gish home for a run-ruled victory.

In the circle, Patterson (11-3) moved into the top ten for wins in a season in program history after striking out five batters over six innings. She allowed four runs on eight hits. At the plate, the Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native, was 2 for 3 with a home run, a team-leading three runs batted in, and a run scored.

With 14 total hits and six extra base hits, Madison boasts five players with multiple hits, led by Rivera's 3 for 4 effort that included a double and a triple. She drove in a run and scored another. Schultz tallied two extra base hits, two runs, and two RBI. Nelson and Paulson also produced a pair of base knocks, with Nelson scoring twice and driving in a run, and Paulson bring home two runners and scoring once.

Game #2: Madison College 5, Bryant & Stratton College 3

Game two saw starting pitcher Hannah Aldrich dominate for the first five innings, holding Bryant & Stratton (27-16) to two hits. During that time, her teammates staked the WolfPack to a five run lead. The Pack broke open a scoreless game in a big way in the third with a pair of home runs. Makenna Gish led off the inning with a solo bomb to left for her team-leading fifth of the season, and four batters later, Kiana Patterson unloaded on the first pitch of her at-bat and sent a three-run blast off the scoreboard for her third of the year. The 4-0 advantage grew by a run in the fifth when Patterson completed her monster day with a ground ball single that drove in Ellie Rademacher

Aldrich ran into trouble in the sixth, walking the first two batters and giving up a three-run homer to trim the lead to two. Sophomore Addison Warner came in and retired the next three batters, as well as the three she faced in the seventh to close out the win.

Patterson was 2 for 3 with a career-high four runs batted in and one scored. She finished the day with four hits, including two homers, seven RBI, and two runs. Gish posted a hit, a run, and a run batted in with her long ball.

Aldrich improved to 5-4 on the season after limiting BSC to three runs on three hits and two walks. The native of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, struck out two in her five innings. Warner also fanned two batters over her two frames and picked up her first save of the season.
