Lopsided wins both ways as #10 WolfPack splits at Black Hawk

Loss snaps eight game win streak over Braves

MOLINE, ILL. - The Madison College and Black Hawk College baseball teams each pick up a one-sided victory in Monday's Region 4 doubleheader that was rescheduled from Sunday due to weather. The WolfPack, who earlier in the day dropped to #10 in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, led by as much as 11 en route to a 13-5 victory in the opener, but the Braves scored runs early to earn an 8-1 decision in the nightcap. The win marked the eighth in a row for the Pack over BHC before the home team snapped it, however, the all-time series is now at 26-14 in favor of Madison.

Game #1: #10 Madison College 13, Black Hawk College 5

Back-to-back base hits from Grant Ross and Payton Frehner started the top of the second inning, and a ground out and error later had the WolfPack up 2-0. In the third inning, Ross came through with a run-scoring double to plate Clayton Slack. Later in the frame, Evan Iwinski and Carter Stebane came through with consecutive two-out, RBI-singles to push the advantage to five runs.

The game really became lopsided with a six-run fourth inning, which began with five straight free passes to force in a pair of runs. Stebane came through with another single to drive in Ross, and Dayton Rozinski-Hicks followed two batters later with a grounder through the left side to score Frehner for a 9-0 lead. An error and yet another bases loaded walk extended the differential to 11 runs.

The Braves fought back in the home half with three runs on four hits, but Madison tacked on two more in the fifth inning. Will Johannes doubled in Frehner and Jake Petasek did the same for Johannes. Despite allowing two more runs for BCH in the fifth, the WolfPack pulled out the eight-run victory.

Frehner, a Waukesha, Wisconsin, native, set a career-high with four runs scored, while also driving in a run on a hit, two walks, and a hit by pitch.

Ross and Stebane each led the team with two hits, and Ross' both with for extra bases. The freshman from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, scored three runs for the second time this season and drove in a run. Stebane had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored, and was matched by Johannes and Iwinski for top runs batted in honors.

The win was awarded to freshman Michael Carpenter (3-2) after the righthander from Hartland, Wisconsin, went four innings and allowed three runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out three before Kellan Short entered for 1.2 innings, and surrendered two unearned runs on four hits and a walk. Nick West pitched the final 1.1 innings with a hit and a K.

Game #2: Black Hawk College 8, #10 Madison College 1

The second game featured a fast and loud start for the home team with Black Hawk College (29-19) scoring three runs in the first inning, which included a two-run homer to left off starter Liam Stumpf. The WolfPack did get a run back via the long ball in the bottom half with freshman Will Johannes smashing his team-leading sixth homer to pull within 3-1.

That would be it for the Madison offense, and BHC went on to score three runs in the second on two hits and three walks and two more with two outs in the third to go ahead 8-1.

The WolfPack tallied just three hits for the fourth time this season. Johannes, a Mukwonago, Wisconsin, native led the way with a hit, a run, and a run batted in.

Stump (3-1) suffered his first collegiate setback after giving up six runs on five hits and three walks in only two innings as part of a quartet of first year arms that saw action. Adam Balcerak allowed two more runs, a hit, and two walks in his lone inning of work, and Ben Kasten helped cool the Braves bats with two-plus innings of scoreless baseball. He walked one and struck out one before Eamonn Mulhern was called on to strike out the final batter.

Up Next:

Madison College (32-10, 5-1), which had its Tuesday, May 2 game at Oakton College canceled, will now play six straight home games to close out the regular season. That stretch begins Thursday, May 4 with a Region 4 and North Central Community College Conference doubleheader against the College of DuPage (30-12, 2-2). The WolfPack could likely clinch the N4C title with at least one win over the Chaparrals, who are currently ranked #11 in the NJCAA Division III Poll. Madison leads the all-time series by a 28-5-1 count. Game times are set for 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Robin Roberts Field.
