#16 Rock Valley too much for WolfPack

Sophomore Rivera shines with five hits

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team ran into an old nemesis and suffered a pair of losses Wednesday at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. Rock Valley College, ranked #16 in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll after moving up following eight consecutive national titles in Division III, won the opener 13-5 and run-ruled the nightcap 11-1 in five innings. The Golden Eagles have won seven straigth over the WolfPack and own a 45-19 in the all-time series.

Game #1: #16 Rock Valley College 13, Madison College 5

The first five batters of the game reached safely for RVC against WolfPack freshman Hannah Aldrich, and it resulted in a 3-0 lead. The Golden Eagles tacked on two more in the second inning with a two-run home run.

Madison College got on the board in the second with a two-out single from Jenna Redders to drive in Aldrich. Two more runs for Rock Valley in the third pushed the differential to 7-1, but second year Sophie Rivera roped a triple to left with two outs ahead of a Makenna Gish grounder back up the middle to make it 7-2.

Trailing 8-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Pack put some pressure on RVC with two runs on two hits and an error. Rivera singled to lead off, and then scored on an error. Mackenna Schultz then plated Eliie Rademacher with a single to left.

Any thought of a comeback was put to bed with a five-run top of the seventh for the Golden Eagles. Rivera capped her performance with an RBI single following a two-out triple by Sammy Nelson in the team's final at-bats.

Rivera, an Ixonia, Wisconsin, native, was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and one batted in. Nelson and Aldrich each had a hit and a run scored, while the trio of Gish, Schultz, and Redders all had a hit and a RBI.

Aldrich (3-1) suffered her first collegiate loss after five innings of work. She allowed eight run on a dozen hits and three walks before giving way to Addison Warner, who was tagged for five unearned runs on six hits and a walk in less than two innings. Claire Smedema entered to clean up the final out.

Game #2: #16 Rock Valley College 11, Madison College 1 (5 innings)

Both teams scored in the opening inning of game two, however, Rock Valley College (18-7) tallied four against Kiana Patterson, while the WolfPack generated one run. Sammy Nelson led off with a single and advanced to third on a Sophie Rivera double. Makenna Gish grounded a ball through the left side to score Nelson.

The game belonged to RVC from then on, as they tallied five more runs in the second and limited Madison to three more hits the remainder of the game. After scoring two more in the fifth, the game was called due to the run-rule.

Rivera and Nelson each recorded two hits, giving Rivera a total of five for the day. Nelson had the lone run scored and Gish the only RBI.

Patterson (2-3) lasted two innings and allowed eight total runs, with six being earned. The native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, struck out one, while giving up eight hits and a walk. Former Columbus HS athlete Claire Smedema tossed the final three innings with two earned runs on five hits and fanned three.
