MADISON, WISC. - Second year arms
Claire Smedema and
Addison Warner may have provided the jolt of energy the Madison College softball team needed Tuesday at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The duo combined for a five-inning no-hitter in a 15-0 win to open a Region 4 doubleheader against Kishwaukee College. The WolfPack closed the sweep with another run-rule decision, claiming a 10-1 victory to get back to .500 for the season. Madison College currently owns a 17-game win streak and a 22-15 advantage all-time over the Kougars.
Game #1: Madison College 15, Kishwaukee College 0 (5 innings)
Claire Smedema and
Addison Warner recorded the first no-hitter since the 2021 WolfPack produced two in one season, including an identical combined no-no over five innings with just two walks by
Mallory Sterling and Lauren Steien on April 9. The feat was matched 13 days later by
Casey Fountain's five-inning blanking that marked the most recent occurrence prior to Tuesday. Smedema, a former Columbus HS athlete, retired the first seven batters she faced before issuing a walk. She closed out the third inning and gave way to Warner, who went 1-2-3 in the fourth and was an out away from finishing the win when the Gilman, Wisconsin, native also issued a base on balls. They each finished with two punch outs.
The Madison College offense did its part with a season-high 11 runs in a 15-batter first inning. After a leadoff walk,
Sammy Nelson and
Karis Paulson both notched run-scoring hits.
Ellie Rademacher singled in a run ahead of a two-RBI double by
Jenna Redders that made it 5-0. The advantage stretched to eight runs when sophomore
Briar Armatoski tripled to plate Redders and
Kaylin Bergum, and then scored herself on an error. The top of the ordered returned to the plate with
Chariell Butler earning a walk and Nelson reaching on a single. That set up Paulson for a three-run homer to center - her second of the season - to make it 11-0.
Paulson struck again in the second with a single up the middle to score Bergum as part of a two-run frame. A run in the third produced by Bergum's line drive to center, and Paulson capped a career day for the Monroe, Wisconsin, product with a double off the wall in left to make it 15-0 as Butler touched home.
Paulson, a first year outfielder, finished 4 for 4 with three extra base hits, six runs batted in and two runs scored. The four hits and six RBI are both career-high's, with the latter making Paulson the eighth player in program history with six or more in a single game.
Bergum, a native of Franklin, Wisconsin, also set a career-high with a 3 for 3 effort at the plate that yielded two runs scored and a run batted in. Redders finished with two hits, two runs, and two RBI. Nelson recorded two hits, two runs, and one driven in, and Butler scored a team-high three runs on a hit and two walks.
The team's 15 runs and 15 hits are both the third-highest single game total this season.
Game #2: Madison College 10, Kishwaukee College 1 (5 innings)
Game two opened with another fast start, as freshman
Madison Coubal ripped the fifth pitch she saw for a leadoff home run to center. Two batters later,
Sophie Rivera tripled home
Karis Paulson, and then
Kiana Patterson drove in Rivera with a single to left for a 3-0 advantage.
Kishwaukee College (5-27) had gone eight innings without a hit until a single off Patterson ended their drought at the plate, and a sacrifice fly gave the Kougars their lone run. Madison answered with a nine-run bottom of the fourth to bring the run-rule into effect.
Mackenzie Backman's sacrifice bunt made it 4-1 as
Hailey Richter raced in from third, and Coubal single in
Brooke Cimler for a four-run lead. With two outs on the board, the Pack scored a run during each of the next five at-bats. Rivera's single to center plated Coubal, and then she scored easily during a triple from Patterson. After an error made it 8-1,
Ellie Rademacher roped a RBI-double to left, and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher as she stole third base for the final run.
Rivera, a former Oconomowoc HS athlete, was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two batted in. She has been perfect from the plate in three games this season, owns five performances with three or more hits, and now boasts a seven-game hitting streak. Rivera's .521 batting average currently ranks in the top-20 nationally.
Coubal nearly matched Rivera, posting two hits, two runs, and two RBI, while Rademacher had a pair of hits, two runs batted in, and a run scored.
Patterson (6-3) went the distance for the fifth time this season after carrying a no-hitter into the fourth inning. The righthander from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was credited with one unearned run on two hits, and struck out two batters over five innings.
