GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - Sophomore
Telin Porter found himself in the right place at the right time to hit a game-winning jumper as time expired to send the Madison College men's basketball team to a dramatic 72-70 road win over the College of DuPage on Tuesday night to reach a season-best three-game win streak. The win was a significant one as the team's hit the final stretch of games in North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 play. Two WolfPack players,
Keith Hoffman and
Deante Luster, recorded double-doubles in the win, which gives the two teams a split of the regular season series and pushes the all-time series tally to 17-14 in favor of Madison College.
The College of DuPage (11-12, 3-2) shot out to an early 7-0 lead before Hoffman got the Pack on the board with a dunk to ignite a 12-2 run that put the visitors ahead by three. Neither team would lead by more than that over the next 12:35 of the first half as the battle went back-and-forth with three ties and 11 lead changes. A successful shot by second year guard
Cortez Telfered with 1:22 left in the half gave the WolfPack a 33-32 lead at the break.
Madison College led nearly the entirety of the second half, and used a 14-4 run to generate a 62-51 advantage after
Nik Feller drained a three-pointer with 5:48 to play. Luster fouled out 25 seconds later, and the momentum began to shift with the host Chaparrals going on a 19-8 burst to even the game at 70-70 with 28 seconds remaining after a three-pointer. The WolfPack called a timeout with 12 seconds left, and on the ensuing play, Hoffman's shot was partially blocked and the ball was loose. Porter was able to track it down and hoist a shot just inside the free throw line as time was running out. The ball bounced twice on the rim before falling through to give the WolfPack the win.
Porter, a native of Houston, Texas, was just 1 for 6 from the floor before hitting the game-winner, and finished with nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Hoffman and Luster each had a double-double in the win. Hoffman, a 6'8" forward/center, tallied 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. He had three consecutive double-doubles and eight overall this season. Hoffman was 6 for 11 overall with a three-pointer and made all six free throw shots.
Luster, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, tallied 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for his second double-double this season and first since November 23. He came off the bench to make 6 of 10 shots, and also led the team with a career-best eight assists.
Madison College finished 27 of 56 (48%) overall, 3 of 8 (37%) outside the arc, and a nearly perfect 15 of 16 from the line. They dominated the glass by a 48-23 count to create a 19-5 edge in second chance points and a 40-30 gap in interior scoring, but had to overcome their second-highest turnover total (23) of the season.
