SOPHOMORE SUCCESS: #17 WolfPack sweep past Kishwaukee

Madison College earns third consecutive win after honoring five second year players

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's volleyball team remained undefeated against Region 4 competition with a three-set sweep over Kishwaukee College on Thursday night inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The #17 WolfPack were led by a trio of hitters that accounted for 28 of the team's 36 kills en route to the 25-13, 25-15, 25-21 victory. Prior to first serve, the team honored the five-member Sophomore Class of 2023: Tyra Anderson, Gabby Hack, Daryn Schaefer, Sophia Venne, and Kendall Weisensel.

An early 6-0 by Madison College turned a narrow one-point lead into an 11-4 advantage in the opening set. The run featured an ace from freshman setter Hope Hesselberg, two kills by first year outside hitter/middle blocker Addyson McHugh, and a kill by freshman middle blocker/right side hitter Amber Horn. The differential slowly grew from there into a lopsided 12-point set win.

Three consecutive aces from first year defensive specialist Faith Radecke ignited a 4-0 start and marked a season-best for the Stoughton, Wisconsin, native. Kishwaukee College (1-12) rallied back to take an 8-7 lead before Courtney Gorum hammered home five kills over the next eight points for a 14-9 advantage. With an 18-14 lead late in the set, the Pack rattled off another 6-0 run capped by a Sophia Venne block to reach set point. Horn's kill made it a two-set-to-none lead in the match.

Madison College would trail most of the third set after a 5-1 start for the Kougars. Behind 20-12, sophomore Tyra Anderson's kill turned the tide as the WolfPack rallied with a 13-1 surge to close out the match. That final push included two lates aces from Gorum and one ace by Hesselberg as Madisn College reached 11 aces for their eight match in double-figures. Their 207 aces on the season currently ranks 14th in the nation and third in

The WolfPack finished the match hitting .242, which included a match-high .345 efficiency off 14 kills in the opening set. Gorum, McHugh, and Anderson nearly split the bulk of the kills. Gorum tallied ten and hit .273, while McHugh and Anderson both had nine kills. McHugh racked up a .381 attack percentage.

Setters Daryn Schaefer and Hesselberg registered 19 and 13 assists, respectively. Hesselberg and Radecke tied for team-high honors with three aces each.

Kendall Weisensel, a second year libero, had 16 of the team's 33 digs, and Horn, a native of New Glarus, Wisconsin, reached high for two of the team's five blocks.

The Kougars still lead the all-time series by a 5-4 margin, however, the WolfPack have won the only two meetings since 2000.
