GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The Madison College men's soccer did finished the 2023 regular season in style with a 2-1 road Region 4 victory over the College of DuPage on Saturday, giving the WolfPack three wins in its final four matches of the season. Sophomore
Gabe Voung added another goal to his record-setting total, breaking another career mark in the process, while fellow second year
Phil McCloskey came through with a brilliant save to preserve the win. The victory narrows the all-time series to 3-2-1 in favor of the Chaparrals, and closes the Pack's regular season with a 6-5-4 record.
The team's played scoreless soccer for the game's first 40 minutes until All-American
Gabe Voung made history in the 41' with his 35th career goal. The forward from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, snared an attempted shot from a teammate inside the penalty box, and was able to convert the scoring strike between the goalkeepers legs for a 1-0 lead. Voung, who two games prior broke the school record for goals scored in a career, used the goal to leapfrog Toby Andrews (2016-17) atop the career points list with 79.
The one-goal lead held through halftime until sophomore
Jamie Le Comte provided some additional breathing room with the eventual game-winning goal in the 55'. The scoring sequence began with a centering pass from freshman
Carter Uhlmann to Le Comte, whose initial shot was deflected by a Chaparrals defender. Le Comte, a transfer from Northeast Community College, then chased down his own rebound and scored the goal for a 2-0 lead.
The College of DuPage (5-6-4) got one goal back in the 66' minute, and then had a significant chance to pull even in the 88' with a penalty kick. Unfortunately for the Chaps, McCloskey was more than up for the challenge in goal, as he not only came through with a save of the PK, but he also regained position and blocked a rebound shot attempt to preserve the lead and the win.
The WolfPack controlled the action throughout the match and finished with a 19-8 advantage in total shots and an 11-6 lead in shots on goal. Le Comte and Voung combined for 14 shots and put eight shots on goal, with the latter leading the way with five SOGs. Le Comte boasts four goals on the season, while Voung leads the team with ten.
McCloskey, a DeForest, Wisconsin, native, picked up five saves to reach 52 for the season.
