MADISON, WISC. - In the final game of what became a 14-game homestand, the Madison College baseball team defeated Kishwaukee College 9-5 in a single, nine-inning game at
Robin Roberts Field on Tuesday. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader for Thursday, April 28, the game was shifted and decreased to earlier in the week and resulted in the WolfPack extending their current win streak to 15 consecutive games. The Pack, who earlier in the day earned the top ranking in the
NJCAA Division II Poll for the fourth straight week, are now 39-24-1 all-time against the Kougars, with wins in 13 of the last 15 get-togethers and four in a row.
The win also marked the 998th career victory for head coach
Mike Davenport, who earned 339 of those wins and a national championship with Kishwaukee College prior to coming to Madison College for the 2005 season.
Madison College struck early with runs in each of the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead. Shortstop
Gabe Roessler scored from third when the Kougars committed a throwing error on
Zach Storbakken's ground ball in the first, and
Gunnar Doyle singled up the middle that plated Roessler and
Gabe O'Brien. Another Kishwaukee College (2-21) error in the third allowed
Carter Stebane to touch home in the third.
Working with the lead, starter
Jacob Arndt issued three straight walks in the fourth to load the bases and surrendered two runs. The Kougars pulled even at 4-4 in the sixth against reliever
Charlie Campbell when a two-out single with the bases loaded added two more runs.
The WolfPack answered right back, regaining the lead with a run in the sixth when O'Brien crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Doyle. They added some insurance runs the following inning when they loaded the bases ahead of yet another Kougars error on a ball put in play by Roessler. Doyle followed a RBI-single that scored Stebane, and Storbakken lofted a sac fly to right to drive in
Eli Kramer for an 8-4 advantage. Both teams tacked on one more run in the eighth, with the home team doing so via their third sacrifice fly of the game.
Madison College finished the game with nine hits and nine walks. Doyle, an Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native, went 2 for 3 with a walk and drove in four runs for the fourth time this spring. Stebane, a second baseman from Brillion, Wisconsin, also produced two hits and drew a walk, and was one of three players to score a pair of runs. Roessler and O'Brien were the other players to score two runs, with the former also collecting a RBI on a hit and a walk.
The win went to
Charlie Campbell (3-0), who worked 1.2 innings without giving up a hit and striking out one. The former South Milwaukee HS athlete did walk three batters and allow two earned runs. Arndt went four innings and was tagged for two runs on a hit and five walks, while also fanning three.
Kellan Short's final stat line included one earned run, one walk, three hits, and a K. And
Dayne Louis closed out the victory with a five at-bat ninth inning in which he struck out two batters, allowed one hit, and walked one.
