An appearance in the Rocket League NJCAAE Final Four will stand out as the top performance for Madison College Esports after it completed its Fall 2022 semester of gaming. The WolfPack competed in six different titles, qualifying for the postseason in all of them. And adding to the list of accomplishments was sophomore Ian Conlin being named the Most Valuable Player in the Wisconsin Collegiate Rocket League (WCRL).

The Rocket League Varsity Team for the WolfPack consisted of Conlin, a native of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and freshmen Wyatt Lindow and Ethan Transue, who were high school Esports teammates at Deerfield High School. The trio competed in WCRL and NJCAAE events throughout the semester, and found tremendous success.
In the WCRL, the WolfPack posted a 6-1 record during the regular season, and put together another impressive showing at the Wisconsin Collegiate Rocket League's LAN Tournament at Carthage College on November 12-13. Madison College earned a Top-6 finish after taking down the defending champions and using a buzzer-beater goal to force a fifth game in a narrow win over MSOE to reach the quarterfinals. The Pack went 5-2, with both losses coming against the eventual state champions from UW-Milwaukee. Conlin was named the WCRL Season MVP following the tournament.
In NJCAAE play, Conlin, Lindow, and Transue were a perfect 7-0 in regular season play to earn a #3 seed and a first round bye in the NJCAAE playoffs. After resounding 3-0 sweeps of Jackson College and Iowa Western Community College, the WolfPack reached the semifinals, where they fell 3-0 to eventual national champion Wake Technical Community College.
The Madison College Overwatch 2 Team also enjoyed great success in the regular season, going 5-2 in the NACE Starleague to earn a postseason spot. They opened the playoffs with a 3-1 defeat of the University of Ottawa to reach the semifinals, and then took the University of Hartford to the brink with a rally from down two-games-to-none before falling 3-2 to finish with a top-four ranking.
In Valorant, Madison College was eyeing a return to glory after claiming the national title in the Fall 2021 semester. The WolfPack competed in an elite division of gamers and racked up a 4-3 record, which was good enough for the postseason. A 2-0 setback to Suffolk County Community College ended the season in the national quarterfinals.
Another title in which the WolfPack have won a national title is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and six players began the season with those same aspirations. Third-year player Baxter Beckwith (5-2), and freshmen Connor Mayhew (4-3) and Zach Stephens (6-0) each qualified for the postseason, while teammates and first year players Ryeven Zoromski (4-1), Waldo Olguin-Gonzalez (0-1), and Celeste House (1-5) did not.Â
In the SSBU playoffs, Mayhew went 0-2 with losses to Luke S. of Heartland Community College and Kameron E. of Lincoln Land Community College. Beckwith, a Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, native who had put together deep postseason runs to the national semifinals in semesters prior, dropped his opener to Kevin C. from WVU Potomac State College, but recovered to take down Michael J. of Bryant & Stratton College (VA) with a 3-2 win to keep hope alive. Like Mayhew, Beckwith was no match for Luke S. of Heartland CC, falling 3-1.
Stephens was the lone player to survive the opening night of the postseason for the WolfPack, going 2-1. The former Madison La Follette High School athlete narrowly lost his first match 3-2 against Keantae S. of Hinds Community College, but bounced back with a 3-0 defeat of Faustino Z. from Eastern Arizona College and a 3-2 decision to Jesse B. of Southwest Technical College. On the next night of competition, Stephens' run was ended with a Round 3 sweep at the hands of C. Wympluff from Western Technical College.
The final titles of competition were Warzone and Gunfight in the Call of Duty family. Both WolfPack tandems went 5-2 during their regular seasons. In the playoffs, the Warzone team was knocked out with a 3-1 loss to Tallahassee Community College, and the Gunfight squad was eliminated with a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Bryant & Stratton College (WI).
