MADISON, WISC. - For the second consecutive postseason, the Madison College women's soccer team's goal of reaching the national tournament was thwarted by perennial power Delta College. The
#2-ranked Pioneers handed the #10-ranked WolfPack a 6-0 loss in the NJCAA Division III Great Lakes District Tournament Semifinal on Friday at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The Pack was making its fourth appearance in the district tournament since 2017. They finish the 2022 season with a 7-5-2 record.
Madison College went toe-to-toe with the Pioneers, who have qualified for each of the past four NJCAA Division III National Championship matches, as the contest remained scoreless over the first 30 minutes. Sophomore
Lexi Kulow ripped the first shot of the match, which was saved by the Delta College goalkeeper. WolfPack 'keeper
Morgan Thompson made three saves before the Pioneers finally converted in the 33'. They added a second goal less than three minutes later to carry a 2-0 differential into halftime. Freshman forward
Madison Johnson tried to cut the deficit before the first 45 minutes expired, however, her 45' shot was denied.
A pair of Delta College goals in the 51' put the game out of reach for Madison College, and the Pioneers tacked on two more with scoring strikes in the 60' and 63'. The Pack generated just one shot in the second half, and it came off the foot of freshman
Savi Pursley.
The match finished with a 32-3 differential in total shots and a 25-3 margin in shots on goal. Thompson, a first year player from New Glarus, Wisconsin, made a career-high 19 saves to reach 115 for the season, a number that ranks second in program history.
Region 12 champion Delta College (13-1-2) is now 4-0 all-time against Madison College, with all four meetings coming in the postseason.
The Pioneers went on to win the NJCAA Great Lakes District Tournament Championship with an 8-0 victory over Harper College after the Hawks upset #5 Rochester Community & Technical College by a 1-0 final in the other semifinal. Delta College earns an automatic bid into the
2022 NJCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.
