MADISON, WISC. - During Tuesday afternoon's resounding 7-0 defeat of rival Milwaukee Area Technical College at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, Madison College freshman
Gabe Voung firmly put his mark in the WolfPack men's soccer record books. The freshman's hat trick moved him atop the school record list for single season goals scored (24) and total points (52). The effort came as the top-seeded WolfPack moved past the fourth-seeded Stormers to secure their first appearance in the Region 4 Division III Tournament Championship since 2017, snapping a streak of four-consecutive seasons with a loss in the semifinals.
Voung, who entered the game sitting two goals back of the 23 goals scored in 2018 by Dejesus Herrera, struck early with a 7' goal off a corner kick. After the WolfPack put the ball in play, a centering pass was headed by sophomore
Chase Quamme in the direction of Voung. The forward nudged it past a defender and the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. It remained a one-goal differential until the 35', when second year midfielder/defender
Evan Thom followed up another corner kick with an incredibly accurate lob from the endline that flew over the 'keeper's hands and bounced in by the far past.
Madison College took full control in the second half with five more goals, including four in a 12-minute span. Voung netted the first of that sequence on a 49' penalty kick that resulted fom a hand touch in the penalty box. First year midfielder/forward
Edgar Mateo joined the scoring list in the 57', and it came off yet another corner kick. The Racine, Wisconsin, product put the ball in play from the corner and received a pass back from
Adair Tlato. Mateo then struck a bending pass toward the opposite post in the direction of Voung, who wisely left it alone as it sailed into the back of the net for Mateo's first career goal. The differential reached five goals in the 60' when
Adriano Ponte made a sliding re-direct of a
Tomas Garcia pass and tallied his third goal of the season.
History was made in the 61' as the WolfPack went ahead by a 6-0 tally, and yet again took advantage of another corner kick. Mateo earned an assist as his corner kick made its way to Voung for a successful header, his third hat trick of the season, and record-breaking goal number 24. The final goal of the match came off the foot of first year midfielder
Martin Apimbu. The WolfPack stole a Stormers throw-in and
Caeben Schomber passed the ball over to the former Appleton West HS athlete for a laser to the upper-right corner fom well-beyond the penalty box to tally his first career collegiate goal.
Voung's 24 goals are tops in all of NJCAA Division III, putting him five better than the next-highest total. In addition to the single-season goals record, he also now surpasses Bryan Ross (2005) and Herrera (2018) for the number one spot in total points for a single season as that tandem each had 51 points. Voung has scored two or more goals in eight matches this season, and has failed to score a goal in just three of the team's 15 contests. He finished Tuesday with all six of his shots going on goal and three reaching the net. Thom was next with four total shots and three shots on goal en route to his second scoring strike of the season.
Madison College controlled the ball for nearly the entirety of the match, racking up a 21-0 edge in total shots and putting 13 shots on goal. Goalkeepers
Phil McCloskey and
Vimas Worjloh combined for the shutout win.
The WolfPack are now 51-15-2 all-time against Milwaukee Area Technical College (0-8), with wins in 21 straight matches. They have also bested the Stormers in ten of 13 postseason meetings.
