WolfPack unable to close halftime gap, take loss at DuPage

Four score in double-figures for Madison College

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team put together one of it's better overall performances of the season, however, it was not enough in a 78-67 setback at the College of DuPage on Tuesday night. The Chaparrals built an 11-point lead by halftime, which the WolfPack was unable to overcome in the North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 matchup. Four players scored in double-figures for the 'Pack, whose 15-game wins streak over COD came to an end as the all-time series narrowed to 27-14. 

The two foes trades baskets, leads, and ties through the game's first five minutes, and after Olivia Marron's interior basket put Madison College up 11-9, the Chaparrals answered with a seven straight points to take the lead for good. The WolfPack hit the free throw line down the stretch of the first quarter to trim the differential to two before finding themselves trailing 22-16 after ten minutes. A 6-0 run by the 'Pack midway through the second quarter again brought the score to a one basket difference. The half would end with the College of DuPage (3-8, 1-2) scoring 14 of the last 19 points for a 42-31 lead. Both team would score 36 points in the second half, which saw the home team on top by as much as 15 points en route to handing Madison College its sixth straight loss.

Sophomore forward Olivia Marron paced the 'Pack offensively with 22 points and eight rebounds, as well as a career-high six blocks. The La Farge, Wisconsin, native was nearly perfect from the field with a 9 for 11 effort and a 4 for 7 performance at the free throw line to tally her second 20-plus point game in the last three outings. The half-dozen rejections ties Marron for the fourth-highest single-game total in team history. 

Three others managed to produce ten points or more, with freshman Amareyna Knox adding 12 points and fellow first years Brianna Hendricks and Laurissa Pickel. Hendricks, a former Watertown HS athlete, dished out a career-best seven assists and Pickel was tops with nine rebounds for a near double-double.

The Chaparrals controlled the glass by a 53-37 margin, including 21 offensive boards that generated a 15-2 edge in second chance points. The WolfPack took better care of the basketball with 18 turnovers, their third-lowest total this season, however, the Chaps took advantage with a 21-11 edge in points off turnovers.

The two teams are slated to play again in Madison on February 10 for the final home game of the regular season and Sophomore Night.

Madison College (2-14, 0-2) is back home on Thursday, January 27 for a North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 showdown with Joliet Junior College (4-12, 1-3). The WolfPack won two out of three games against the Wolves back in the 2019-20 season and boast a 21-14 lead in the head-to-head series. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m. inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium.
