MLK Celebration Saturday to include Madison College, high school basketball games

WolfPack games at 1pm & 3pm, with MLK Jr. Big Eight Classic before & after

On January 17, 2022,Americans will celebrate Martin Luther King Day, the only federal holiday commemorating an African-American. Madison College will begin the national day of service celebration activities on Saturday, January 15, 2022, with a series of basketball games, performances, and service awards. Before and after the pair of afternoon WolfPack games will be four girls high school basketball games as part of the MLK Jr. Big Eight Classic inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium

    **The WolfPack's men's matchup against Waubonsee Community College was canceled.

5:00 PM -Sun Prairie vs. Madison West

Performance Schedule
  • 12:55 PM - Singing Performance by Theola Carter (Credits include Trouble in Mind and Red Hot and Cole, The American Revue Girls Revue. and program improvement with Dane County's Tamara D. Grigsby of the Office of Equity and Inclusion)
  • Madison College WBB Halftime - Styles Defined Crew (SDC is an adult dance team of The Dance Dictionary & The Hitterz Collective. Their goal is to remind youth and the community about their power through dance and the amazing healing attributes dance provides. By educating, showcasing, competing, teaching, traveling, and coordinating events, they help others unlock their superpowers.)
  • Madison College MBB Halftime - Black Star Drumline and The Dynamic Badgerettes (Created and founded in 2008 by award-winning drummer/percussionist Joey B. Banks to give kids in the Madison community an opportunity for creative expression through the "Percussive Arts." Under the leadership of director Clyde Mayberry, the House Urban Arts Initiative opened its dance studio on South Park Street in April 2018 and created The Dynamic Badgerettes, which includes dancers from ages 5-19.)
 
Awards
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Awards recognizes excellence in community service activities carried out by an individual, organization, or group, and seeks to encourage similar efforts by others who may want to serve in the community.
  • Will Green is the executive director of Mentoring Positives, a nonprofit offering mentoring, professional development, and Off The Block enterprises.  For over 15 years, Willie Green of Mentoring Positive has been programming for youth, including leadership training, sports, and community service. He has made a significant impact in breaking the cycle of poverty and addressing the many challenges that our youth have in the community. 
  • Ashzianna Alexander is a student activist and an active leader in Black Girls Matter, an organization in her high school. She is also involved with Freedom Inc., a social justice and leadership development community organization. With Freedom, Inc., Alexander is a leader in the No Cops in School movement, advocating for the removal of police in her school. She also advocates for community representation in decision-making, including alternatives in her high school's curriculum.
