MADISON, WISC. - The fate of the Madison College women's soccer team turned from bleak to celebratory in a matter of 30 minutes after overcoming a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2 in overtime against Illinois Valley Community College in a
NJCAA Region 4 Division III Semifinal at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East on Saturday. The #2-seeded WolfPack received two goals from freshman
Monica Tapia-Gutierrez, the second of which was a golden goal winner late in the first overtime, en route to eliminating the third-seeded Eagles and advancing to the Region 4 championship match.
Madison College was the first to find the back of the when Tapia-Gutierrez began her outstanding day with a goal in the 13'. The successful try came off a pass by fellow freshman
Angelina Perez, her third helper of the season. Less than a minute later, however, the match was tied as Illinois Valley Community College (2-4) beat WolfPack first year goalkeeper
Marin Stauffacher.
The match remained tied through the first half until the Eagles took their only lead off the match early in the second half with an assisted goal. The score was still a one-goal differential when the match entered it's 71', and the WolfPack worked the ball deep into the offensive zone. Tapia-Gutierrez fired off a shot that was deflected by the IVCC keeper, however, forward/midfielder
Elizabeth Foye was there to take advantage and buried a rebound shot to net the equalizer. It was the third goal of the season for the native of Poynette, Wisconsin.
The Region 4 tussle would require additional time, so the WolfPack and Eagles played into the first overtime tied 2-2. The first shot of OT went high for Foye just two minutes in, and it would be nearly seven minutes until the next shot was on its way. Tapia-Gutierrez, a former Madison East HS athlete, made a successful move to get by one IVCC defender inside the 18-foot line, and before two other defenders converged on the defender, she booted a goal to the upper right corner for the win. She now boasts five goals this spring.
Madison College generated just one more total shot that IVCC, 15-14, but did own a 10-7 lead in shots on goal. Foye and Tapia-Gutierrez each registered four shots on goal, while
Brittany Lenz had two.
Stauffacher, a Columbus, Wisconsin, native, made seven saves in the winning effort.
The WolfPack are now a perfect 7-0 against the Eagles all-time, including three wins this spring.
