Walk-off win opens DH sweep of Lake County

Fulton provides big bat in finale of hard-fought twin bill

MADISON, WISC. - Saturday's Region 4 doubleheader between Madison College and the College of Lake County provided plenty of drama as the home team came away with two narrow victories, including a walk-off in the opener at Robin Roberts Field. The then-18th-ranked WolfPack took advantage of a Lancers error in the bottom of the seventh to exit with a 3-2 win, before holding off a late CLC rally for a 7-5 decision in the finale. The pair of W's improves the all-time lead for the 'Pack to 29-5 in the head-to-head series.

Game #1: #18 Madison College 3, College of Lake County 2 (7 innings)

It took more than five innings before either team was able to tally a run in the day's first game. In the home half of the sixth inning and with one out, freshman catcher Kameron Laskowski and first year third baseman Zach Storbakken hit back-to-back singles. A fielder's choice eliminated Laskowski at third, but left runners at the corners with two outs for Logan Mantz, and the freshman first baseman roped a double to center that allowed Storbakken and Gunnar Doyle to race home for a 2-0 lead. The Lancers answered right back to consecutive singles off starter Jacob Wilde to start the top of the seventh, and eventually tied the game bunt single that scored two runs.

Jake Nelson's line drive single to right opened the bottom of the seventh, and two batters later, after a pitching change, Taiten Manriquez bunted his way aboard and advanced Nelson to third. A ground ball by Brady Jurgella in the next at bat was misplayed by the College of Lake County, allowing Nelson to score the game-winning run.

Wilde did not factor in the decision despite 6.1 innings of two-run, six-hit baseball. The lefthander from Waukesha West HS struck out three batters before giving way to Jett Thielke in the seventh. Thielke (2-2) allowed one hit, hit a batter, and struck out a batter in his two-thirds-innings to get the win.

Mantz, a native of Slinger, Wisconsin, led the 'Pack with two RBI and was one of seven players with a base hit. Storbakken and Nelson each posted a hit and a run scored.

Game #2: #18 Madison College 7, College of Lake County 5 (7 innings)

The bats came alive in the second game as Madison College (36-12) produced seven runs and six hits in the first two innings combined. Brady Jurgella and Jake Fulton opened the game with singles, and when Zach Storbakken was hit by a pitch, it left the bases loaded for Gunnar Doyle. A walk to the Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native, forced in the first run. Jake Nelson then delivered a two-run single to center, and Eduardo Saucedo drove in another with a sac fly to make it 4-0. Two hits and two walks against starter Luke Hansel cut the College of Lake County (32-16) deficit in half in the second, but the 'Pack responded in a big way in the home half. With Nathan Ebersole and Jurgella aboard, Jake Fulton ripped his first collegiate home run over the right field wall for a three-run blast that increased the home team's edge to 7-2. The Lancers added two more runs in the third, however, it remained 7-4 into the seventh inning. Sophomore Patrick Foldy took over in the seventh, and surrendered a lead-off double and a subsequent run-scoring single to allow the game-tying run to step to the plate for the Lancers. Foldy was able to strand two runners and close out the WolfPack win for his first save of the spring.

Hansel (7-1) worked six innings and was tagged for four earned runs on four hits and three walks, while also recording five K's. Foldy's final line was for a run, three hits, and a strikeout.

Jurgella and Fulton dominated the day at the plate as the 1-2 hitters in the WolfPack's game two lineup. Both went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, and Fulton, a Crystal Lake, Illinois, native, added three runs batted in with his homer. Nelson produced two RBI with his lone hit in the game.
