Golden goal nets WolfPack OT win in season opener

Subba's game-winner comes on free kick in 96'

MADISON, WISC. - Freshman Dhananjai Subba spun home a free kick in overtime to give the Madison College men's soccer team a dramatic 2-1 victory over North Central Community College Conference rival Joliet Junior College in the season's first game Wednesday at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The win is the first for the WolfPack in a season-opening match since 2017, ending a two-year losing streak in such games.

Madison College was able to strike first when sophomore - and returning all-conference and all-region forward - Samuka Toure converted a scoring strike in the 24'. Toure took advantage of some poor JJC ballhandling deep in their defensive zone to get a open look at the net, and posted his first goal of the season and sixth of his career. Unfortunately, the led was short-lived, as the Wolves answered with a goal of their own less than two minutes later.

A defensive struggle took over for the remaining 64 minutes of regulation. Madison College appeared to net a go-ahead goal in the 62', however, it succesful kick was wiped away by an offsides call.

The match headed into its first overtime period still even at 1-1. A foul on Joliet Junior College (0-1-0, 0-1-0) off a corner kick handed the 'Pack a free kick just beyond the 18-yard box. Subba, a Madison, Wisconsin, native, lined up the kick and managed to bend it over the JJC block and bank it off the crossbar just beyond the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper (see video in main story image above). It was his first collegiate goal.

The tightly contested match saw 29 combined shots (15 MC, 14 JJC), with the visiting Wolves owning a 7-3 edge in shots on goal and a the homestanding WolfPack leading 6-2 in corner kicks.

Sophomore 'keeper Sebastian Varela (1-0) collected six saves and allowed the lone goal en route to his second career victory.

The win narrows the all-time series to a 12-11-4 record in favor of JJC, with Madison College earning a win (5) or tie (2) in seven straight meetings.
