MADISON, WISC. - Sunday's Region 4 doubleheader at Robin Roberts Field resulted in a split between the Madison College baseball team and Triton College. The WolfPack, behind a shutout performance by starter
Luke Hansel, won 11-0 in five innings before the Trojans rallied with a late grand slam to claim the nightcap, 6-4. Triton College, a former North Central Community College Conference member prior to this year, won three of four meetings this season and pulled within 25-20 in the all-time series.
Game #1: #20 Madison College 11, Triton College 0 (5 innings)
Luke Hansel, a freshman righthander from Caledonia, Wisconsin, scattered five hits and a walk against the Trojans, keeping the opposition off the bases and the scoreboard. He finished the five-inning outing with a pair of strikeouts.
The offense, meanwhile, staked him to an early, and big, lead. Madison College scored the game's first run on a wild pitch, and two batters later,
Logan Mantz singled in another run for a 2-0 lead after one inning. In the second, the 'Pack pounded out eight runs on five hits, five walks, and two errors.
Nathan Ebersole and
Zach Storbakken each picked up RBI singles ahead of back-to-back walks to
Gunnar Doyle and Mantz that each forced in a run. After
Kameron Laskowski's productive ground out made it 7-0,
Brady Jurgella ripped a single to center to bring home Doyle and Mantz. The rally was capped by another Ebersole run-scoring single, his second of the inning. Doyle picked up a final RBI in the third to extend the lead ot 11-0 as
Jake Nelson touched home on the single.
Four players enjoyed multiple hits in the game, including Mantz, Jurgella, and Ebersole, who each drove in two runs and scored another. Storbakken also produced a pair of hits, to go along with a RBI and run scored. Doyle twice crossed home and drove in a pair, as well. Nelson led the team with three runs scored.
Game #2: Triton College 6, Madison College 4 (7 innings)
The WolfPack seemed primed for a sweep after overcoming an early 1-0 lead with three runs in the fourth.
Gabe O'Brien got it going with a triple down the right field line that drove in Edwardo Saucedo and
Logan Mantz. A wild pitch during the next at bat was enough for O'Brien to race in for the 3-1 lead. In the fifth,
Zach Storbakken singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored when
Gunnar Doyle laced a double to left. Unfortunately, the 4-1 advantage evaporated with one swing in the sixth when Triton College (21-12) loaded the bases against starter
Jacob Wilde, who then gave up a grand slam to catapulted the Trojans in front by a 5-4 count. The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the seventh before the 'Pack went down in order to end the game.
Storbakken finished with two of the team's six hits and scored one run. O'Brien had a team-high two runs batted in and scored another off his extra base hit.
Wilde (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing five earned runs, five hits, and a walk. The Waukesha, Wisconsin, native, added to his team-leading strikeout total with 13 Ks, matching the team's season-high effort from the day prior by
Reagan Klawiter. Wilde left after 5 2/3 innings and gave way to
Jett Thielke, and the righty was tagged for a hit and a run during his inning-plus.
