MADISON, WISC. - Friday's women's soccer match at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East pitted the only two programs left competing in the North Central Community College Conference during the Covid-19-altered spring season. That fact makes Madison College's 5-1 defeat of Rock Valley College that much more important for the two-time defending league champs. The WolfPack received two goals each from freshman
Monica Tapia-Gutierrez and
Angelina Perez to pull away in the second half with four goals.
The first goal of the match, and only one of the first half, came off the foot of Tapia-Gutierrez in the 38' that was assisted by Perez. It remained a 1-0 tally well into the second half when the home team went on a scoring binge. It began with the second Tapia-Gutierrez goal off another Perez assist in the 69', which proved to be the game-winning goal. Thirty seconds later, freshman
Elizabeth Foye netted her second career goal for a 3-0 lead. Perez took over in the match's final ten minutes with goals in the 82' and 84', with assists from
Amelia Clarquist and Tapia-Gutierrez, respectively. Rock Valley College (0-1, 0-1) scored their only goal with less than four minutes to play.
Perez, a Madison, Wisconsin, native, finished with a career-best two goals and six points, while Tapia-Gutierrez, also from Madison, did the same with her two scoring kicks and five points. Perez also led the team with nine total shots and four shots on goal.
First year goalkeeper
Marin Stauffacher registered three saves in the winning effort, while her defense limited the Golden Eagles attack to eight total shots and four on goal. Madison College racked up 19 total shots and put nine on goal.
Madison College narrowed the all-time count to 7-6-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles, and have now won six of the last eight matches.
