#19 WolfPack salvage split with late offensive surge

Madison College powers four home runs in finale at Triton College

RIVER GROVE, ILL. - The Madison College softball team was late in finding their offensive power Thursday at Triton College and split a Region 4 doubleheader against their former conference rivals. The Trojans, who are receiving voted in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, eeked out a 4-2 win in the day's opener, while the 19th-ranked WolfPack used four home runs and 11 total extra base hits to dismantle the home team by a 17-6 tally in the nightcap. The split puts the all-time series at 24-12 in favor of the 'Pack.

Game #1: Triton College 4, #19 Madison College 2 (7 innings)

A scoreless game through two-and-a-half innings became a 2-0 contest when Triton College used two hits, including a home run, and an error to plate a pair of runs. Madison College answered with a run in the top of the fourth when freshman Maddie Kvatek reached on an error to start the inning and then scored on another Trojans miscue of a ball hit to left field by sophomore Abby Luczak. The second long ball of the game for the home team came in the next half inning and the two-run blast pushed the differential to 4-1. The WolfPack's next best chance to score came in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. In their final at-bats, first year infielder Katie Joten attempted to spark a rally with a solo home run to center, but it would prove to be their lone run of the inning.

Madison registered just three hits in the game for their second lowest output of the season. Joten, Luczak, and Abbie Cavadini each produced one.

Freshman Casey Fountain (5-1) suffered her first pitching loss of the spring after giving up four earned runs on six hits and five walks. The righthander also struck out five.

Game #2: #19 Madison College 17, Triton College 6 (7 innings)

The two teams combined for five more home runs in the day's second game, however, it was Madison College that produced four of them. Maddie Kvatek started the balls flying out with a solo homer in the first inning to give the Stevens Point, Wisconsin, native four this season. Mia Noelker drove in Megan Miklesh in the second to make it 2-0, and Abby Luczak's run-scoring single plated Kvatek in the third for a 3-0 edge. Triton College (28-7) tied the score in the third with four hits off starter Lauren Steien. A run in the fifth put the visitors back up by one, however, the Trojans went ahead 5-4 in the home half.

The first of two big innings came in the sixth when the 'Pack added seven runs on five hits. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Katherine Brandl and Miklesh, the last of which drove in two runs, were sandwiched between a pair of two-run homers by Joten and Bella Williams. Six more hits in the final inning yielded six more runs as Brandl picked up two more RBI on a double center, Williams singled in Brandl, and Noelker capped the WolfPack's scoring with a final two-run blast.

Of the team's 17 hits, 11 went for extra bases with six doubles, a triple, and four home runs. Kvatek finished a perfect 4 for 4 with a career-high five runs scored and one batted in. Luczak, a former Laconia HS athlete, posted three hits and was one of seven players to score two runs or more. Brandl, Williams, and Noelker all tied for team-high honors with three runs batted in. Joten's two home runs on the day push her to a team-best five this season.

Steien, a first year righthander, tossed all seven innings to improve to 4-1. The Taylor, Wisconsin, product surrendered six earned runs on nine hits and two walks.
