GALESBURG, ILL. - The Madison College bats could not be stopped Saturday at Carl Sandburg College, producing 28 runs and 31 hits in sweeping a Region 4 doubleheader. The WolfPack, then ranked #19 in the NJCAA Division II Poll, won a pair of run-ruled, five-inning games by scores of 11-3 and 17-4 against the Chargers.
Game #1: #19 Madison College 11, Carl Sandburg College 3 (5 innings)
Sophomore
Abby Luczak began a productive afternoon with a RBI double to left to put the 'Pack up 1-0 in the first. That lead exploded to 8-0 in the second with a seven-run surge on seven hits and a walk. Madison College saw seven consecutive batters reach safely with two outs, highighted by RBI at-bats for
Katherine Brandl,
Katie Joten, Luczak,
Megan Miklesh, and
Briel Burg. Luzcak and Burg each drove in two runs with the double and triple, respectively. They padded the lead with two more run in the fourth as Luczak added another run driven in and
Abbie Cavadini added her name to the list. Yet another Luczak run-producing single in the fifth made it 11-0. Even three runs in the bottom of the fifth for the Chargers wasn't enough to prevent the run-ruled decision.
Luczak, a native of Rosendale, Wisconsin, finished a perfect 4 for 4 with a career-best five runs batted in, as well as two runs scored.
Maddie Kvatek, Miklesh, and Burg each produced two hits, with Kvatek scoring a team-leading three runs and Burg driving in a pair.
Second year arm
Mallory Sterling (4-0) scattered five hits and allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, while walking one and striking out four.
Game #2: #19 Madison College 17, Carl Sandburg College 4 (5 innings)
Game two started out competitively with a 2-0 lead for Madison College (19-3) through two innings, however, the WolfPack busted out a monster 12-run inning. Highlighting the inning were a two-run single from
Megan Miklesh and a three-run home run by
Hannah Melum, the first of her career.
Maddie Kvatek registered two RBI singles in the frame. Madison College would three more runs before the came was decided in the fifth inning.
Kvatek, a former Stevens Point Area SH athelete, led the bats with three hits, a career-high three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Miklesh registered two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI. Melum, an Iola, Wisconsin, native had a career-best four runs driven in, and
Mia Noelker was tops with three runs scored. Palms and Hraban both tallied a pair of hits and runs batted in, along with each touching home once.
Madison College is now 12-3 all-time against Carl Sandburg College (1-9).
