Madison College outscores Regents 36-7

ROCKFORD, ILL. - The Madison College baseball team found a rythm Monday in a pair of resounding wins over NCAA Division III Rockford University JV, earning wins of 15-2 and 21-5 at Rivets Stadium. The WolfPack, receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, outscored the Regents by 29 runs and have now scored 46 runs on 33 hits. Over eight games in the head-to-head series, the 'Pack have won seven straight and scored double-digit runs in five of those victories.

Game #1: Madison College 15, Rockford University 2 (6 innings)

Madison College tallied a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, which included a two-RBI single by Zach Storbakken and a run-scoring hit by Jake Fulton. After the Regents got one back in the home half, the WolfPack added three more, highlighted by a two-run home run for Storbakken. Two singles and four-consecutive free passes pushed across three of the four runs scored in the fifth. After a home run to start the fifth for Rockford University, the visiting 'Pack ended the in the sixth via run-rule with five additional runs. Ryan Hubley and Eli Kramer each had RBI hits in the inning.

The offense wasn't the only thing flourishing, with Madison College pitching holding the Regents to two runs on six hits. Starter Alex Redman (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win by going five innings and striking out eight batters. The lefthander from New Berlin, Wisconsin, was tagged for two earned runs on six hits. Freshman Dayne Louis struck out the side in the sixth to close out the win.

Jake Nelson, a first year infielder from Altoona, Wisconsin, went a team-best 3 for 5 with a pair of runs scored. Storbakken posted two hits, a team-leading four runs batted in, and two scored. His home run marked his fourth of the year. Kramer and Fulton also had two hits a piece, while seven different WolfPack players touched home twice.

Game #2: Madison College 21, Rockford University 5 (7 innings)

Game two saw Madison College fall behind early when the Regents countered two early WolfPack runs with three of their own in the bottom of the first. The 'Pack went ahead 6-3 in the third on a hit, three walks, two errors, and four combined wild pitches and passed balls. Despite two runs by Rockford University in the third, Madison College ran away from there, starting with two runs off an Eduardo Saucedo's triple to right. Six runs in the sixth were highlighted by RBI doubles from Taiten Manriquez, Ryan Hubley, and Maguire Fitzgerald, the last of which plated two runs. Seven more runs in the seventh completely put the game out of reach. Saucedo added two more RBI on another double before Kameron Laskowski capped the scoring with a single to right to bring home Brady Jurgella.

Six of the team's dozen hits went for extra bases, led by Saucedo's 2 for 4 effort. The Oregon, Wisconsin, native drove in five runs and scored one. Three others registered two hits in the game. Jurgella and Hubley each scored a team-leading three runs, with six others right behind with two runs. Fitzgerald racked up three RBI and Gunnar Doyle had two.

Four different pitchers combined to limit the Regents to a single hit and four earned runs. Charlie Campbell started the game and gave up the lone hit, along with seven free passes, that led to three earned runs over an inning of work. Luke Hansel (2-1), a freshman from Union Grove HS, worked a scoreless second inning with one strikeout to secure his second win of the season. Justin Grosse and Jett Thielke also pitched in relief, with Grosse going two innings and striking out five, and Thielke picking up two K's over three innings for his second save of the season.

Madison College (7-4) is off until Thursday, April 1 when they travel to the College of Lake County (9-9) for a NJCAA Region 4 doubleheader. The WolfPack are 27-5 all-time against the Lancers heading into the twin bill that starts at 2:00 p.m and 5:00 p.m.
