MADISON, WISC. - Four days after battling tooth-and-nail to a 2-2 draw, Madison College and Harper College were at it again with a 2021 NJCAA Region 4 Division III Men's Soccer Tournament Semifinal at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East on Tuesday afternoon. Neither team was able to score through regulation and two overtime periods, sending the match to a penalty shootout that saw the fourth-seeded Hawks escaped with a 4-3 decision over the top-seeded WolfPack. The setback ends the Madison College season with a 10-3-2 record and in the Region 4 Semifinals for a fourth consecutive year.
The host WolfPack generated more offensive looks throughout the match with a 15-7 advantage in total shots and a 7-1 lead in shots on goal. Sophomore
Jonas Luskey Sanders put a shot on goal in the game's first seven minutes, but was turned away by the Hawks goalkeeper. Freshmen
Erick Antimo and
Oszkar Siklos each put two shots on goal to lead the attack for Madison College (10-3-2). The lone Harper College (10-4-2) shot against sophomore 'keeper
Sullivan Schwitters was one minute into the match, and it would mark his only save. Both teams were able to register a single shot over the two overtime sessions, and both missed wide of the target.
The shootout began with both teams missing on their opening attempts, including a kick off the foot of freshman
Adrian Henkovic, and followed with successful kicks for each squad. Sophomore
Jheison Garcia put the WolfPack on the board to even the penalty kicks at 1-1, and after another Hawks goal, fellow second year
Evan Thom put a shot passed the visiting goalkeeper for a 2-2 score. Round four provided the first separation as Madison College took a 3-2 lead thanks to a scoring strike from Antimo. Despite a goal for the Hawks in the fifth round, the WolfPack had a chance to win the match, however, Sanders' attempt was denied and the score was back to even at 3-3. The sixth round proved to be the final round after Harper College was able to score against Schwitters and freshman
Chase Quamme came up empty with a chance to extend the shootout.
The loss leaves the WolfPack just 1-5 in postseason play against Harper College, who now boasts a 21-8-3 advantage in the head-to-head series. The Hawks advance to the Region 4 Tournament Championship on Saturday, October 23 at Illinois Valley Community College. The third-seeded Eagles advanced with a 3-2 road win over second-seeded Rock Valley College.
