Sanders helps WolfPack top MATC-Milwaukee, remain atop N4C standings

Sophomore ties assist record as Madison College readies for season finale Saturday

MADISON, WISC. - Jonas Luskey Sanders gave the Madison College men's soccer team a major assist to avoid any potential let-up with a 9-0 win over Milwaukee Area Technical College on Wednesday at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The sophomore tied a school record with six assists to push the WolfPack to a North Central Community College Conference win that keeps them atop the league standings heading into Saturday's season finale. The 'Pack has reached the ten-win plateau for the first time since 2018, and for the fourth time in the last six years after going eight straight years without accomplishing that feat.

Madison College wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, placing a ball in the back of the net just 39 seconds into the match. Sanders tallied his first assist in setting up second year forward Matthew Ruggiero. After Sanders set up freshman Erick Antimo for his seventh goal of the season in the 8', he again teamed with Ruggiero to give the WolfPack a 3-0 after 17 minutes of play. Ruggiero, a former Madison West HS athlete, recorded his first career multi-goal performance and also boasts seven goals this fall. The WolfPack made it a four-goal differential at the half with 25' scoring strike from freshman Jose Gonzalez, giving the Madison, Wisconsin, native his first collegiate goal. Sanders was credited with another assist, giving him four in the first half.

The second half started much the same as the first, with the home team netting a goal less than two minutes in. First year forward Isaak Cordova punched in a pass from Evan Thom, and three minutes later, did it again with help from Antimo. Cordova, a native of DeKalb, Illinois, matched a career-high with two goals, and, at the moment, was tied with Sanders for the team lead with ten goals. Sanders got back in the assist game in the 52' and 55' with a pair of passes to Caeben Schomber, giving the freshman from Wisconsin Heights HS a two-goal game. The last of those assists tied Sanders for the single match program record that was set in 2015 by Connor Waity. Sanders, a Madison, Wisconsin, product, capped the record-setting performance with a goal on a free kick outside the penalty box to regain his spot as the team-leader with 11.

Sanders finished the game with six assists, one goal, and eight points, the last of which ties for fourth most in a game in school history.

Madison College dominated the contest with a 32-3 advantage in total shots and a 22-3 edge in shots on goal. Antimo and Ruggiero would tie for team-high honors with five shots on goal each.

Sophomores Sebastian Varela and Jheison Garcia combined in goal for the shutout, the third this year for the 'Pack. Varela made three saves in 66-plus minutes as the starter.

The win also gives the 'Pack a season sweep and an 18-match win streak over their in-state rival Stormers (0-10, 0-8). The all-time series improves to 48-15-2.
