#15 WolfPack take loss to Stormers in regular season finale

Madison College earns #2 seed, bye into semifinals of Region IV Tournament

MILWAUKEE, WISC. - A bad first quarter Saturday ultimately led to defeat as the Madison College women's basketball team fell 93-75 to rival Milwaukee Area Technical College in a North Central Community College Conference game that capped the 2019-20 regular season. The WolfPack, who entered the game ranked #15 in the NJCAA Division III Poll, received 24 points from Aniah Williams and double-doubles by Olivia Marron and Lilly Dorman as a second straight loss brought their regular season record to 16-9 and their N4C mark to 8-6. The loss also snaps a four-game win streak against the Stormers and marks the fifth season series split between the two programs over the past seven years. Madison College owns a 74-14 lead in the all-time series.

Milwaukee Area Technical College (13-14, 8-5) seized control early with a 12-2 run to open the game, and followed with five consecutive points to go ahead 17-6. The differential slowly grew of the rest of the quarter until it was 26-11 heading into the second. Madison College recovered with six straight points to begin the second quarter, and were able to narrow the gap to nine points on a pair of Marron free throws with 3:25 left the half, however, the host pushed back for a 15-point halftime lead. The WolfPack engineered their biggest rally midway through the third with a 17-2 surge that brought the score to 59-55 inside of three minutes to play. Unfortunately, MATC-Milwaukee rattled off the next 11 points to regain a double-digit lead ahead of the fourth quarter. Madison College did pull within eight with 3:36 remaining before being outscored 17-7 to close out the game.

Williams once again led the WolfPack in scoring with 24 points, pushing her into third on the all-time scoring list with with 1,065 career points and leaving the sophomore guard ten points shy of the number two spot. The native of Beloit, Wisconsin, connected on 10 of 26 shots and 4 of 7 free throws, but was unsuccessful on seven long-range shots. She also had three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Saturday was her 12th game this season with 20 or more points.

Marron, a freshman forward, registered her third career double-double by matching career-highs with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The former La Farge High School athlete, who has posted nine double-digit scoring games this season, hit 8 of her 12 field goal attempts and also went 4 for 7 at the stripe. She reeled in seven of her dozen boards on the offensive end before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Dorman racked up 11 points and ten rebounds for teh sixth double-double of her sophomore season. The forward from Madison was good on 4 of 7 shots and 3 of 4 free throws to reach double-figures for the 14th time.

Freshman Kylie Esser became the third forward to tally ten or more points, and did most of her damage at the line with a 6 for 6 effort. She also converted 2 of 4 attempts from the field for ten points, to go along with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. The Highland, Wisconsin, native is averaging 12.0 points per game of the last three contests after posting just 3.4 points a game in the previous 23 outings.

First year guard Amber Sue Udelhoven dished out a team-best four assists, to go along with eight points, four rebounds, and three steals.

The WolfPack outrebounded the Stormers by a 44-36 margin, but also committed seven more turnovers than the opposition. Madison College owned a 21-15 lead in second chance points, while Milwaukee Area Technical College led 35-23 in points off turnovers and 50-44 in points in the paint.

Madison College (16-10, 8-6) will not focus on the postseason and the upcoming 2019-20 NJCAA Region IV Division III Tournament, for which they have been given the #2 seed and a bye past the quarterfinals. The WolfPack will await the winner of Tuesday's matchup between #3 Joliet Junior College (13-17, 8-6) and #6 Harper College (1-25, 0-14), and will play in the semifinals at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22 at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Madison College split two games with the Wolves and lead the all-time series by a 20-14 count, with two of those wins coming in five previous postseason meetings. The WolfPack swept two games with Hawks this season and have won 16 consecutive meetings, including the only two postseason meetings.
