MADISON, WISC. - The biggest statistical difference in Wednesday night's in-state and North Central Community College Conference rivalry matchup between Milwaukee Area Technical College and the Madison College men's basketball team came on the glass. The
NJCAA Division II #2-ranked Stormers secured 28 more rebounds in a 108-89 decision over the WolfPack, who saw six players reach double-figure scoring before the final horn inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The 'Pack has lost three straight games to their oldest rival, yet still lead the all-time series by a 64-51.
Madison College flexed their muscle early with an 11-2 run that put the home team on top by five in the game's first three minutes. Three and a half minutes later Milwaukee Area Technical College (20-1, 6-0) took the lead for good as they began a 12-0 surge and held the WolfPack scoreless for nearly four minutes. The Stormers continued to slowly pull away, scoring eight of the half's final ten points to go up 58-39 at the break. The second half played at a much more competitive level, with both teams netting 50 points. As foul totals rose quickly for both teams, MATC-Milwaukee pushed the advantage to 30 with ten consecutive free throws midway through the half, and then saw the differential reach its peak inside of six minutes remaining with the score at 99-65. Madison College finished the game by outscoring the Stormers 24-9.
Leading the scoring effort were sophomores
Shamar Newman and
Davion Washington with 17 points each. Newman, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native, made 7 of 12 shots and all three of his free throws, while also picking up five rebounds, a team-high four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Washington, a former Madison East High School athlete, was 6 for 11 from the field and 5 for 8 at the stripe, to go along with three boards, two assists, and two steals. The point total extends Newman's streak of double-digit scoring efforts to four straight, with Washington accomplishing the feat four times in the past seven games.
Guards
Earl Lewis and
Amire Williams-Stribling both posted 14 points in the contest. Lewis, a sophomore, scored all of his points in the first half and made two of his three 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions.. He also was tops defensively with four steals. Williams-Stribling set a career-high with his scoring output, making the first double-figure point total of his career. The 6'0" native of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, registered five baskets, including one from long range, and was 3 for 6 at the charity stripe. He also had a career-best five rebounds.
Freshmen
Jason Williams and
Marcus Kartes also surpassed ten points with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Williams had four baskets and five free throws, and also led the WolfPack with seven rebounds. Kartes knocked down three 3-pointers for the fifth straight outing, during which he is shooting 63% from three-point territory.
Madison College shot 47.8% (32-67) overall and was 7 of 18 (39%) from distance. Milwaukee Area Technical College racked up a 61-33 edge in rebounding, which led to a 26-0 advantage in second chance scoring. The Stormers also owned narrow leads in points off turnovers and points in the paint.
