Home cooking helps WolfPack to three-set win over Oakton

Dramatic set one win propels Madison College into Thursday showdown with #8 Harper College

MADISON, WISC. - In a rebound effort after a tough tournament weekend, the Madison College women's volleyball team took advantage of some home cooking to earn a three-set sweep of Oakton Community College inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium on Tuesday. A hotly contested opening set required an extra point as the WolfPack scored a 26-24 win, followed by set victories of 25-18 and 25-19. The victory improves the 'Pack to 10-0 all-time against the Owls, and gives Madison College some momentum heading into a key early season match on Thursday.

The WolfPack posted 29 kills for the match, including 11 each in the second and third sets, and finished with a .351 attack percentage after opening at .167 and closing with a .500 efficiency in the last set. Madison College notched an assist on 25 of the 29 kills, while also collecting six aces, six blocks, and 30 digs.

Sophomore and Alverno College transfer Cathleen Flannery paced the 'Pack attack with seven kills, one better than fellow second year Olivia Marron and freshman Calla Borchert. Borchert, a 6'0" middle blocker/opposite from Lake Mills, Wisconsin, also registered the team's top hitting percentage at .500.

Freshman Lena La Fleur got the call at setter and delivered with a career-high 23 assists. The former Mt. Horeb High School athlete, who now owns two double-digit assist totals so far this season, led the team with a career-best three aces, as well.

Borchert was also a standout defensively, coming up with career-high 5.0 blocks, the most by a WolfPack player in a single match in 2019. Farther from the net, second year libero Sage Esser tracked down 11 digs, her third double-digit effort of the year.
