MADISON, WISC. - Madison College baseball coach
Mike Davenport took full advantage of his team's regular season finale, using 22 players in an 8-1 defeat of defending NJCAA Division III National Champion Oakton Community College on Tuesday at
Robin Roberts Field. The WolfPack, who jumped to #14 in the
NJCAA Division II Poll prior to first pitch, capped their regular season with a 35-9 record, including a 19-1 mark at home, and are currently riding a six-game win streak. Tuesday's game also marked the final regular season home game for 14 second year players, who were recognized for the commitment and accomplishments, before the game. That group has amassed a 70-31 record over two years, winning both a North Central Community College Conference title and a Region IV championship.
The WolfPack took full advantage of some sloppy early pitching by the Owls. After retiring the first to Madison College batters, the next seven at-bats included two hit batters, two walks, an error, a wild pitch, and a run-scoring single from sophomore
Nathan Aide. It all added up to an early 3-0 lead. Oakton tallied their lone run in the second with a lead-off home run off freshman pitcher
Jackson Brown.
The score remained 3-1 until the WolfPack began a stretch of four straight innings with a run in the fourth.
Marquis Reuter drove in
Henry Henk in that inning, which was followed by a Aide producing another run in the fifth with a triple that set him up to score on a wild pitch. The differential reached 6-1 in the sixth when Reuter hit a sacrifice fly to center that plated
Walker Jenkins.
In the seventh, Aide continued his productive afternoon with a lead-off home run to center for his second of the season, which came exactly one month after hitting his first. Three straight walks later in the frame forced in the game's final run.
Aide, a native of Franklin, Wisconsin, tied a career-high with three hits and produced two runs batted in and two runs scored. The outfielder now has five career home runs.
Fellow second year
Jarrett Scheelk was the only other player with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with a run scored. Reuter, a product of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, drove in two runs as part of a 1 for 4 day.
The two teams combined to use 17 pitchers as they tried to get as much work for their staffs as possible before postseason play begins this weekend. Madison College worked a different pitcher each inning, with starter
Connor Jasurda (2-0) netting the win. The freshman from Marshfield, Wisconsin, struck out one of the three batters he faced.
Andy Neu,
Taylor Jansen,
Matt Hamilton,
Carl Renz, Scheelk,
Brandon Komar, and
Eliot Turnquist each turned in a scoreless inning, with Scheelk striking out his opposition in order in the seventh. The group combined to fan 12 batters, while allowing one run on three hits, one walk, and a hit batter.
The WolfPack is now 16-10 all-time against the Owls, with wins in four of the last five meetings.
