SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - Madison College softball flexed their pitching muscle on Friday by shutting out Waubonsee Community College in a pair of Region IV wins. Freshman
Maddie Fink and
Jordan Martin combined for a two-hitter in opener as the
#11-ranked WolfPack won 3-0, and Martin returned in the finale to post ten strikeouts in a 7-0 decision. The 'Pack is now 14-10 all-time against the Chiefs, winning eight of the last 11 meetings, and are currently riding a six-game win streak on the season.
Game #1: #11 Madison College 3, Waubonsee Community College 0 (7 innings)
Neither team was able to generate much offense in the day's first game, which saw three innings of no-hit softball until Madison College got a lead-off home run from first basemanÂ
Dany Gumz. The sophomore belted her team-leading sixth home run of the season to give the WolfPack a 1-0 lead. An inning later, freshmen
Morgan Dercola and
Kaela Kraemer opened with back-to-back singles to provide a scoring opportunity for sophomore
Paige Cornelissen, who lined a double to left to drive in two more runs and cap the scoring.
Starter
Maddie Fink (12-2) worked six scoreless innings and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a pair of singles. She walked to and struck out five en route to her tenth straight victory. Fellow righthander
Jordan Martin entered in the seventh and struck out the side in order to earn her first career save. The three K's also pushed the Hortonville, Wisconsin, native over the century mark for the season, making her the sixth pitcher in program history to accomplish that feat.Â
Of the WolfPack's eight hits, Gumz led the way as the former Marshall High School athlete went 2 for 4 with a run scored and one batted in. Cornelissen, a product of Wrightstown, Wisconsin, had a team-leading two RBI.
Game #2: #11 Madison College 7, Waubonsee Community College 0 (7 innings)
The nightcap was all about Martin, who picked up right where she left off and whiffed ten more batters over the next seven innings for her second double-digit strikeout effort of the season. She scattered four hits and walked one to secure her seventh straight win as a starter and improved to 12-2.
Martin already owned a lead when she first stepped into the circle after lead-off hitter
Maegan Brookins singled to left, stole second and third base, and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman
Montana Platts. It stayed a one-run game with Waubonsee Community College (25-16) until the fourth when Platts struck again, this time lining a single to center to score two runs. The 'Pack put the game out of reach in the fifth with four runs on seven hits.
Nicole Ferch singled in a pair of runs to start the surge, and
Olivia Bancroft-Hart and Platts joined in with run-scoring singles to finish it off.
Platts, a former Wilmot Union High School athlete, was a perfect 3 for 3 with four runs batted in to tie a career-high in RBI that she had set twice earlier this season. Five other players had two hits to help the WolfPack reach 17 for the game, tying for their third highest output of the season. Brancroft-Hart, a native of Cambria, Wisconsin, used her two hits to drive in a run and score two more.Â
