WolfPack close out regular season with road wins at Kishwaukee

Madison College boasts 36-10 record, eight-game win streak ahead of postseason

ALTA, ILL. - The Madison College softball team finished the 2019 regular season on a season-long eight game win streak after sweeping a doubleheader at Region IV opponent Kishwaukee College on Saturday. The WolfPack, ranked #11 in the NJCAA Division II Poll, used a pair of Morgan Dercola home runs to run-rule the Kougars 11-0 in five innings in the opener, and then needed a late run to eek out a 6-5 victory in the nightcap as they finish 36-10 ahead of the Region IV Tournament. The two victories break a tie in the all-time series, with the 'Pack now leading 17-15 after winning their 12th straight head-to-head matchup.

Game #1: #11 Madison College 11, Kishwaukee College 0 (5 innings)

The visiting WolfPack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half inning. Paige Hintz followed a Maegan Brookins lead-off walk with a double to center to make it 1-0. Irene Tomasovic singled in Hintz, and Platts capped the inning with a run-scoring double to left that brough home Tomasovic. In the second, Kaela Kraemer stole home and Maegan Brookins scored on a Hintz sacrifice fly to make it 5-0. The fireworks began to fly in the third when Dercola hit her second home run of the season, a two run shot to center that pushed the advantage to 7-0. Leading 9-0 in the fourth, she came up again with a runner on and delivered her third career blast with a ball deep over the left field field to make it 11-0.

Dercola, a native of Sussex, Wisconsin, finished 2 for 3 with a career-high four runs batted in and two runs scored. She becomes the third player this season, joining Dany Gumz and Kylie Endress, and the eighth in program history to register a multi-home run game. Former Kimberly High School athlete Irene Tomasovic was 3 for 4 in the game and led the 'Pack with three runs scored, while also driving in one. It's her seventh game this season with three hits or more.

Freshman Jordan Martin (13-2) improved her win streak in the circle to eight straight, holding the Kougars scoreless over three and two-thirds innings on just two hits. Her seven strikeouts move her into second on the Madison College single-season strikeout list with 118. Maddie Fink took over for the final four outs, earning three via punchout to bring her total to 77.

Game #2: #11 Madison College 6, Kishwaukee College 5 (7 innings)

The WolfPack again took the early lead in game two with a pair of first inning runs from one swing of the bat. Irene Tomasovic crushed her fourth dinger of the year deep to center three batters after Maegan Brookins again worked a lead-off walk. Madison College made it 3-0 in the third with a sac fly, and then made it 5-0 in the fourth after a run-scoring double by Kaela Kraemer and a fielder's choice off the bat of Anna Manke. The lead, however, would not last as Kishwaukee College (11-24) plated four runs in the fourth of starter Cathryn Hiller, and tied it in the fifth against reliever Brianna Farrington. Ultimately, the game-winning run came off the bat of the day's most productive hitter. With two outs and a runner at second in the top of the seventh, Morgan Dercola drove a hard ground ball to the gap to allow Olivia Bancroft-Hart to touch home. Farrington then worked 1-2-3 in the bottom half to secure the victory.

Kraemer finished the game a career-best 3 for 3 with a run scored and one batted in. Tomasovic and Dercola each had two hits, with Tomasovic leading the team with two RBI.

Hiller tossed four innings and was credited with four runs, three of which were earned, on six hits and struck out four. Farrington (7-3) was in for two innings with two hits and a run, to go along with a single strikeout. It's the first win for the Columbus, Wisconsin, native since April 16.
