MADISON, WISC. - A day after suffering two disappointing losses, the Madison College softball team showed it can move on quickly with two run-ruled victories on Friday against Region IV opponent Carl Sandburg College at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The
11th-ranked WolfPack defeated the visiting Chargers by scores of 11-2 and 9-1, boosting their win streak in the head-to-head series to seven straight and their all-time record advantage to 10-3.
Game #1: #11 Madison College 11, Carl Sandburg College 2 (5 innings)
The Chargers appeared to grab control of the game in the second with a lead-off home run against starter
Maddie Fink, however, the WolfPack was just getting ready to pounce. After a lead-off walk and a single put two runners on, sophomore
Nicole Ferche ripped a triple to the wall in right to put Madison College on top 2-1. Freshman
Montana Platts followed with a single to bring Ferch home, and then later scored on a line drive single by second year shortstop
Hannah Grahl to make it 4-1. Carl Sandburg got one run back in the third before giving up a six-spot in the home half. Ferch again drove in the first run with a single to left after
Paige Hintz opened with a double to left. Two batters later,
Paige Cornelissen made it 6-2 on a single through the left side. The biggest hit of the inning came from second year first baseman
Dany Gumz, whose fly ball to left was misplayed and allowed all three runs aboard to cross home. The made it 10-2 before the inning ended with
Irene Tomasovic's two-bagger to left that scored Gumz. For good measure, Madison College tacked on one more run in the fourth as Cornelissen doubled to center for the WolfPack's third consecutive base hit, which allowed Ferch to score.
Three WolfPack position players registered three hits each in the game. Ferch, a native of Cudahy, Wisconsin, was 3 for 3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, setting new season-high's for hits and runs scored. Former Wrightstown High School athlete
Paige Cornelissen also had three hits, helping her drive in two runs and score another. And Platts, a product of Wilmot Union High School, used her three base knocks to record a run scored and one batted in.
Paige Hintz matched Ferch for team-high honors with two runs scored.
Fink improved to 7-2 on the year with her fifth consecutive win. The freshman from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, held the Chargers to two runs on five hits and two walks, while also striking out one in her five innings in the circle.Â
Game #2: #11 Madison College 9, Carl Sandburg College 1 (5 innings)
Madison College left no doubt who was going to win the finale, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings. After
Dany Gumz provided the game's first run win a single to right, freshman
Irene Tomasovic crushed an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run blast that made it 3-0. They added another run when
Nicole Ferch singled in freshman
Morgan Dercola. In the second, the 'Pack used back-to-back singles by
Olivia Bancroft-Hart and
Paige Cornelissen to score the first run of the frame, and then added RBI doubles from Gumz,
Paige Hintz, and Dercola to reach an 8-1 differential. The game's final run was tallied in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Gumz.
Freshman starter
Jordan Martin (7-2) picked up her first win since March 21 as she held Carl Sandburg College (20-20) to one run on five hits, with three of the hits coming consecutively to start the second inning. The Hortonville, Wisconsin, native worked five innings and struck out five in her third game back from injury.Â
At the plate, four players enjoyed multi-hit performances, led by Gumz. The former Marshall High School athlete drove in three runs and scored two more as part of a 2 for 2 game. Tomasovic's third home run of the season accounted for both of her RBI and her run scored, but only half of her hits in the game. Cornelissen and Dercola were the other two players with two base knocks, with Cornelissen tying Gumz for the team lead in runs scored at two.
