#11 WolfPack post 29 runs in resounding sweep of Bryant & Stratton

Madison College collects dozen extra base hits, holds Bobcats to six total hits

MENOMONEE FALLS, WISC. - In an extremely lopsided doubleheader, the Madison College softball team ran all over Region IV and in-state foe Bryant & Stratton College on Saturday, finishing with a 29-1 scoring differential over ten innings. The #11-ranked WolfPack earned a 12-0 shutout of the Bobcats in the opener by scoring in each of the game's five innings, and then used an 11-run first inning in the nightcap to eventually win 17-1 in their second-highest scoring game of the season. The 'Pack has was four straight games - all in five-inning run-rules - and now owns a 4-0 all-time record in the brief all-time history with the state's newest program.

Game #1: #11 Madison College 12, Bryant & Stratton College 0 (5 innings)

The Madison College bats used two hits and a walk to score two runs in the opening half inning, with freshmen Irene Tomasovic and Paige Hintz each driving in a run. Fellow first year Montana Platts followed suit in the third to make it 3-0. After two more runs in the third, the 'Pack used three hits in the fourth to stretch the lead to 8-0. Dany Gumz, Tomasovic, and Hintz each drove in a run. They capped the scoring in the fifth, where freshman Kyrsten George led off with a race around the bases, Gumz homered to left, and Hintz drove in her team-leading fourth run of the contest.

While the offense was putting up crooked numbers, freshman Maddie Fink (8-2) was hanging zeros on the scoreboard from the circle. The former Stevens Point Area Senior High athlete earned her sixth consecutive win after scattering three hits over five innings and recording five strikeouts.

Of their 16 hits, nine went for extra bases, led by three from Gumz. The native of Marshall, Wisconsin, was 3 for 4 with three RBI and three runs scored, and now has a team-high five home runs on the season. Tomasovic was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with four runs scored and two batted in. And Hintz drove in her four runs with three hits - both career-high numbers - as the middle third of the lineup went a combined 10 of 12 with seven runs scored and nine driven in.

Game #1: #11 Madison College 17, Bryant & Stratton College 1 (5 innings)

The finale got out-of-hand in a hurry thanks to a pair of bombs by the WolfPack. Before an out was even recorded, Irene Tomasovic made it 4-0 with a grand slam to deep center for her third home run of the year and second in as many days. Three batters later, and still without an out on the board, Nicole Ferch joined the fun with a three-run blast to left to make it a 7-0 ballgame on the sophomore's fourth long ball. After Paige Hintz drove in a run, Tomasovic again came to the plate with the sacks packed and nearly delivered again, this time settling for a three-RBI triple to right to make it 11-0 after the first half inning. Freshmen Anna Manke and Morgan Dercole each drove in a run in the second, and a Brianna Farrington run-scoring single in the third brought the score to 15-0. The final runs cames yet in the third when Manke added to her RBI total with a single through the right side that plated two more.

Tomasovic's seven RBI game is the second best single-game effort in program history, falling one shy of Breanna Guenther's eight RBI effort on March 28, 2015, against Lake Region State College. Manke's four runs batted on two hits establish new career-high totals in both categories for the Lodi, Wisconsin, native. Hintz, a native of Almond, Wisconsin, also set a career-high with three runs scored, while two other players scored multiple times. Thirteen different players registered a hit, with four enjoying two hits in the game.

First year righthander Cathryn Hiller allowed just one run to Bryant & Stratton College (11-23) over her five innings of work. The Random Lake, Wisconsin, product surrendered three hits, issued two walks, and struck out two batters en route to snapping a two-game losing skid and improving to 4-3 on the season.
