Long ball lifts WolfPack past Region IV rival Kankakee

Scheelk blasts 2 of 3 Madison College home runs, Foldy keeps Cavaliers in check

MADISON, WISC. - Cold temperatures forced NJCAA Region IV rivals Madison College and Kankakee Community College to alter Sunday's planned doubleheader for a single, nine-inning game at Robin Roberts Field. The WolfPack, who topped the Cavaliers in last year's Region IV Tournament, used three home runs - two off the bat of Jarrett Scheelk - and a stellar pitching performance from Patrick Foldy to secure a 7-1 win that extends their current win streak to six games. The 'Pack, who has now won 14 of their last 15 games, are now 19-17 all-time against Kankakee Community College, with wins in three of the last four meetings.

Each team connected on a solo home run in the third inning to open the scoring. After the Cavaliers got a two-out homer off Foldy, the WolfPack's Nick Gile did the same in the bottom half to even the score. From that point on, Madison College scored runs in three of the next four innings. Freshman Derek Lee singled in Nathan Aide in the fourth to give Madison College the lead, which they would not relinquish. In the fifth, Walker Jenkins reach on a hit by pitch and scored two batters later on an Adam LaRock single to left. Scheelk followed with a two-run bomb to left to push the score to 5-1. In his next at-bat, Scheelk hit yet another two-run shot, this time to center field, giving the 'Pack their 7-1 edge.

Foldy (4-1) picked up his fourth straight win on the hill, retiring a career-high 11 batters via strikeout. The former Sussex Hamilton High School standout surrendered just one earned run on four hits and two walks in his seven innings. Fellow first year Eliot Turnquist worked the final two innings and struck out another five batters. Three of his K's came in succession after walking the first three batters he faced in the eighth inning.

Scheelk, who is committed to play at NCAA Division I Bradley University next year, collected his second career multi-HR game and finished one long ball short of matching his three home run effort from April 12 of last year against Bryant & Stratton College. The first baseman finished with a season-high four RBI and scored two runs. Scheelk now leads the team with five home runs on the year. Gile's home run accounted for his lone hit, and pushes his season homer total to two. LaRock and Aide also had two hits in the game, with LaRock scoring two runs and driving in another, and Aide scoring one time.

Up Next:

Madison College (17-7) adjusted their schedule for the upcoming week, and will now host in-state and Region IV foe Bryant & Stratton College (7-16) for a doubleheader on Monday, April 15. The WolfPack swept the Bobcats in a twin bill last year in Madison, marking the first-ever meetings between the two programs. The 'Pack outscored Bryant & Stratton College by a 26-6 margin behind a three-home run game from Scheelk. Game one at Robin Roberts Field is set for a 2:30pm start, followed by a 5:30 p.m. approximate first pitch in the nightcap.
