MADISON, WISC. - A late decision to switch venues pushed the Madison College baseball home opener ahead by 11 days and the WolfPack took advantage with a pair of shutout wins over Kishwaukee College on Wednesday at
Robin Roberts Field. Behind outstanding pitching from its starters, the 'Pack limited the Kougars to ten total hits and recorded 17 strikeouts en route to a 10-0 win in six innings to open the day and a 3-0 decision in the nightcap. The victories extend Madison College's current win streak to a season-high four games and move the WolfPack back over the .500 mark, while also pushing their all-time record against Kishwaukee College to 35-23-1 after posting wins in nine of the last ten meetings.
Game #1: Madison College 10, Kishwaukee College 0 (6 innings)
Sophomore
Matt Hamilton (3-0) was in full control as he took the home mound for the first time in 2019, earning his third win of the season by working 5.2 scoreless innings and scattering five hits. The righthander from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, struck out five to match his season high. Fellow second year
Troy Hickey came in to record the final out in the top of the sixth inning.
After pitching around a pair of singles in the first and one more in the second, Hamilton's teammate provided him with a comfortable lead by scoring five runs in the home half of the second.
Lucas Trebian drove in
Carl Valk to open the scoring, and then
Henry Henk crossed home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. After a
Walker Jenkins RBI single,
Adam LaRock drove in two more with a hard ground ball up the middle for the 5-0 advantage. The 'Pack made it 9-0 in the fourth thanks to three hits and three walks.
Nathan Aide drove in a run and Henk brought home two more with a single to right. Madison College earned the run-rule walk-off when Trebian followed back-to-back walks in the bottom of the sixth with a line drive to left that plated Valk and ended the game.
Every position player registered a hit for Madison College, with Trebian, a former Madison La Follette athlete, the only one with a two-hit day. The catcher/infielder went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in and another scored. Henk and LaRock also posted two RBI. Valk, a native of Appleton, Wisconsin, used his one hit and three walks to score a team-high three runs.
Game #2: Madison College 3, Kishwaukee College 0 (7 innings)
Much like the day's first game, the second featured a dominating effort by Madison College starting pitcher
Eliot Turnquist (1-2). The sophomore earned his first career win thanks to a career-high nine punchouts, giving him a team-leading 20 K's on the season. The former Columbus High School athlete worked five innings and scattered four hits while walking just two.
The WolfPack offense was able to contribute a single run in each of the second, third, and fourth innings. A walk and a steal put
Nathan Aide in scoring position in the bottom of the second, and after a Kougars (0-5-1) error,
Luke Malmanger singled him in for a 1-0 lead. Aide, a native of Franklin, Wisconsin, hit into a fielder's choice in the third that allowed
Walker Jenkins to score following his leadoff single. And in the fourth, Jenkins hit a sacrifice fly to center that was good enough for
Lucas Trebian to tag up and score from third to make it 3-0.
Turnquist gave way to freshman
Andy Neu for the sixth inning, and the left-hander gave up one hit and struck out one in a scoreless frame. Sophomore
Brandon Komar entered in the seventh to record his first save of the season and the team's second with a perfect seventh inning that include one K.
Madison College collected seven hits, led by two-hit games from Trebian and
Matt Miller. Aide and Jenkins were the lone players to both score and drive in a run.
The sweep of two games against his former college, head coach
Mike Davenport is now at 898 career victories. The all-time leader in wins at Madison College has a career record of 898-406-3, giving him the program's second best winning percentage at .687. Davenport has 559 wins with the WolfPack after earning 339 in nine years at Kishwaukee College.
