WolfPack avenge earlier loss as part of Thursday sweep

Hiller tosses two-hitter in nightcap after Madison College collects season-high for hits in opener

KISSIMMEE, FLOR. - The day began with a lot of offense and ended with tremendous pitching as the Madison College softball team earned two more wins on Thursday to run their win streak to four straight games. The #12 WolfPack avenged an earlier loss to Onondaga Community College (NY) with a 12-8 victory that included a season-high 21 hits, and then received a two-hit shutout from freshman Cathryn Hiller in taking a 4-0 contest against NCAA Division III Bethel University JV (MN).

Game #1: #12 Madison College 12, Onondaga Community College 8 (7 innings)

Two days after dropping an 8-5 contest to Onondaga Community College, Madison College was back on the diamond against the Lazers looking for some revenge. Both teams put two runs across in the opening inning, with WolfPack freshmen Irene Tomasovic and Montana Platts each driving in one. The 'Pack went ahead 3-2 in the third when Paige Cornelissen singled in Kaela Kraemer, and then opened the game up with a four-run fourth to take a 6-2 advantage. Tomasovic followed a Dany Gumz leadoff triple with another run-producing single and then scored on Platts' three-bagger. Nicole Ferch finished the inning with line drive to center to score Platts. Thought the Lazers rallied to tie the game 6-6 in the top of the fifth, the bottom half of the inning saw Madison College pump out another four runs with back-to-back two-RBI base hits from Platts and Ferch. Still up two in the sixth, Gumz provided some additional breathing room with a two run homer to center to make it 12-8.

Madison College had seven different players register multiple hits. Platts, a native of Burlington, Wisconsin, set career-high's by going 4 for 5 with four runs batted in, as well as two runs scored. Ferch, Gumz, and Maegan Brookins each enjoyed three-hit games, while Cornelissen, Tomasovic, and Morgan Dercola each with two hits. Ferch drove in three runs, while Gumz and Tomasovic both finished with three runs scored and two RBI. The home run by Gumz marked her team-leading fourth of the season. Of the WolfPack's 21 hits, five went for extra bases.

Despite the productive day at the plate, Madison College struggled in the field, committing a season-high seven errors. Sophomore shortstop Hannah Grahl had three, followed by two from Dercola and one each by Platts and Jordan Martin. Martin, a first-year pitcher from Hortonville, Wisconsin, improved to 6-2 on the season after working the first five innings in the circle. She surrendered six runs, three of which were earned, four hits, and two walks, while striking out seven. Maddie Fink entered in relief for the final two innings to close out the win. She was tagged for two runs, one earned run, three hits, one walk, and three K's.

Game #2: #12 Madison College 4, Bethel University JV 0 (7 innings)

The day's finale was all about the pitching of freshman righthander Cathryn Hiller (2-1). The Random Lake, Wisconsin, product, scattered two hits - one in the first inning and one in the fifth - in holding the Royals without a run. Hiller walked three batters and struck out a season-high five.

The WolfPack gave Hiller an early lead to work with, plating two runs in the first inning. Dany Gumz doubled home Paige Cornelissen, which Irene Tomasovic followed with a run-scoring single to right to make it 2-0. The first year outfielder from Kimberly picked up two more RBI in the fifth with a line drive double to right that scored Tristan Scholler and Montana Platts.

Tomasovic finished 2 for 4 with three runs batted in and was one of seven players to pick up a hit in the game.
