Pair of six-run innings for WolfPack key doubleheader sweep of Glendale CC

Madison College ends Arizona Spring Trip with 5-6 record, will play Chicago White Sox Arizona League squad in exhibition today

GLENDALE, ARIZ. - Playing their final official games of the annual Arizona Spring Trip, the Madison College baseball team earned a pair of wins over Glendale Community College on Thursday and concluded their time in the desert with a 5-6 record. Both games featured a six-run inning for the WolfPack en route to victories of 10-5 and 9-8. The two W's closed the gap in the all-time series with the Gauchos, who still lead by a 6-5 count.

Game #1: Madison College 10, Glendale Community College 5 (7 innings)

The first big inning of the day came with the opening at-bat for the WolfPack as they put up a half-dozen runs in the top of the first. A hit by pitch put Carl Valk on base, and he proceeded to advance to third on a Walker Jenkins single and then scored on a wild pitch. A fielder's choice made it 2-0 with a runner still aboard and one out when sophomore Adam LaRock sent an 0-1 offering over the left field fence for his first career home run. Four batters later, second year catcher Lucas Trebian roped a two-out double to left that plated two more runs to make it 6-0. After Glendale got two back in the second, Madison College pushed the score to 7-2 on a run-scoring bloop single by freshman Pierson Gibis that brought LaRock home. A LaRock sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 8-3, and a pair of RBI singles up the middle from Jenkins and Nick Gile in the fifth capped the WolfPack scoring with a 10-3 advantage.

LaRock, an Eau Claire, Wisconsin, native, put together his most productive game so far this season, going 2 for 3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Jenkins, a sophomore from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, used his two hits to score a team-high three runs and drive in another. Gile and Trebian also enjoyed two-hit games, with the latter picking up a pair of RBI.

First year pitcher Patrick Foldy (1-1) earned his first career win with another outstanding six-inning effort. The former Sussex Hamilton High School athlete limited the Gauchos to one unearned run on two hits and two walks, while striking out four. Fellow freshman Jake Smith tossed the final inning and was tagged for two runs on two hits.

Game #2: Madison College 9, Glendale Community College 8 (7 innings)

The nightcap saw Glendale Community College (10-22) take the early lead with a first inning run against starter Carl Renz, and it stayed a one-run game into the third inning. A leadoff walk to Patrick Sommers eventually led to a run-scoring triple from Walker Jenkins, followed by a RBI double by Nick Gile to give the WolfPack their first lead of the game. The Gauchos answered back with three runs in the home half to regain a 4-2 advantage. However, the Madison College bats stayed hot and produced six runs in the top of the fourth. Two walks and an error loaded the bases with one out for freshman Derek Lee, who also earned a free pass to first to force in a run. Following a pitching change, Carson Holin drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and Jenkins singled in his second RBI of the game. Gile then smashed a triple on a line drive to center that scored two more, and an error by the centerfielder allowed Gile to race all the way around to score himself for an 8-4 ballgame.

Glendale continued to chip away with two runs in the fifth inning, and another in the seventh to pull within one entering the last inning. Madison College added a key insurance run thanks to a Luke Malmanger leadoff single, which was followed by a wild pitch and then an error by the pitcher on a sac bunt from Lucas Trebian allowed Malmanger to race in for the game-winning run. Lefthanded freshman Andy Neu took over in the seventh and loaded the bases on three consecutive singles. After a strikeout, the Gauchos made it a one-run game again with a sac fly to left. With the tying run 90 feet away, Madison College got a huge defensive play when a single through the left side ended with Carson Holin throwing out Glendale's lead runner as he tried to score from third to end the game as Trebian applied the tag.

Nathan Aide posted a 3 for 4 day at the plate, with Jenkins and Gile following with two hits each. Jenkins registered two runs scored and two driven in, while Gile had three RBI and one run scored off his two extra base hits. Malmanger, a native of Janesville, Wisconsin, and Sommers, who hails from Oregon, Wisconsin, also scored two runs each.

On the hill, Renz (1-0) went 4.2 innings to earn his first collegiate victory. The former Pewaukee High School athlete was tagged for six earned runs on five hits and six walks, while also striking out seven. Freshman Taylor Jansen threw an inning and a third with one run allowed on a hit and a walk. Neu, a Kewaskum, Wisconsin, native, picked up his first career save - and the first save of the season for Madison College - despite four hits and one run allowed in the final inning.
