Four-game win streak ended with pair of losses for WolfPack

Madison College falls to Onondaga, region foe Waubonsee for first losing sweep of annual spring trip

CLERMONT, FLOR. - The Madison College softball team opened their annual Florida Spring Trip with five wins in six games, including a run of four straight, however, that all ended on Tuesday with a pair of losses at the Legends Way Ballfields. The WolfPack, who also dropped to #12 in the NJCAA Division II Poll during the day, lost 8-5 to Onondaga Community College (NY) to snap the win streak before taking a 7-3 setback to Region IV foe Waubonsee Community College.

Game #1: Onondaga Community College 8, #12 Madison College 5 (7 innings)

Back on the field after a day off on Monday, Madison College scored the game's first run in the third inning when an error at second base allowed freshman Kaela Kraemer to score. The Lazers finally got to WolfPack starting pitcher Cathryn Hiller with a run in the fifth, then created some separation with a three-run home run in the sixth. The 'Pack got a run back in the home half with Montana Platts' RBI-single plated Irene Tomasovic. Onondaga Community College (3-3) tallied three more runs in the seventh against Hiller and relief pitcher Brianna Farrington, though the Madison College defense didn't help their cause with three errors in the frame. Trailing 8-2 and entering their final at bat, the WolfPack attempted a comeback as Dany Gumz doubled home a pair of runs and Tomasovic followed single to score Gumz and pull within three runs. After a Platts double put runners in scoring position and brought the tying run to the plate, sophomore Nicole Ferch popped out in foul territory to end the game.

Tomasovic and Platts accounted for nearly half of the WolfPack's nine hits, as each had two base knocks. Tomasovic, a native of Kimberly, Wisconsin, also had a run scored and one batted in, while former Marshall High School standout Dany Gumz registered two RBI and a run scored as part of her one-hit day. Seven different players had a hit in the game, including three doubles.

Hiller (1-1) took her first loss of the season after allowing five earned runs on eight hits. The Random Lake, Wisconsin, product walked two and struck out two over 6.1 innings. Farrington tossed the final two-thirds of an inning and was credited with three unearned runs and a base on balls.

Tuesday's game marked the first-ever meeting between the two programss. They are scheduled to play again on Thursday in Kissimmee, Florida.

Game #2: Waubonsee Community College 7, #12 Madison College 3 (7 innings)

The day's second game was against a more familiar opponent and once again Madison College took the first lead in the third inning. A two-out rally with back-to-back hits set up a double steal situation that saw Dany Gumz cross home as Irene Tomasovic stole second. Facing WolfPack starter Jordan Martin, Waubonsee Community College (6-3) plated three runs on three hits in the home half of the third to take their first lead, but the 'Pack answered quickly with a two-run fourth. Doubles by Morgan Dercola and Nicole Ferch resulted in the first run, and Allison Tomlinson's hard ground ball through the left side drove in the second. Still tied in the fifth, the Chiefs regained the edge with two more runs before putting the game away with another two-run inning in the sixth.

Tomasovic was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate, including a double, to establish a new season-high for hits. Six other players each had a single hit. Ferch, a Cudahy, Wisconsin, native, was the only player to have a hit, score a run, and drive one in as well.

Martin (5-2) tossed five innings en route to her second loss in seven starts and was tagged for five earned runs on six hits. The freshman and former Hortonville High School standout struck out six and walked three. She gave way to fellow first year Maddie Fink for the final inning and surrendered two unearned runs on two hits, two walks, and two K's.

The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on the Chiefs home field in Sugar Grove, Illinois, on April 14. Madison College is 12-10 in the all-time series with the Chiefs
