SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. - In a rematch of a 2018 NJCAA Division II World Series elimination game, Madison College and Scottsdale Community College went pitch-for-pitch in a pair of tightly contested games that both finished with 1-0 final scores. The Fighting Artichokes won the doubleheader opener in the first extra inning before taking the nightcap in similar fashion in the seventh inning. WolfPack pitchers put forth a dominant effort, led by freshman
Patrick Foldy's no-hit bid through six innings of the second game. Madison College has now dropped three straight games after a 2-0 start and trails Scottsdale Community College by a 12-3 margin in the head-to-head series.
Game #1: Scottsdale Community College 1, #15 Madison College 0 (8 innings)
The WolfPack and Artichokes played three and one-half innings of baseball before either team was able to get a hit and finished their scheduled seven-inning still locked in a 0-0 tie. After Madison College went down in order in the top of the eighth, Scottsdale Community College used small ball to manufacture the game's winning run. A leadoff walk issued by reliever
Eliot Turnquist was followed by a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch to put a runner 90 feet from home. A Turnquist strikeout put two outs on the board, however, the Artichokes second hit of the game - a bloop beyond the reach of sophomore shortstop
Walker Jenkins - was enough to win the game in a walk-off.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Jarrett Scheelk went six scoreless innings in his season debut on the hill, during which he allowed one hit, issued five walks, and struck out a career-high six batters. Turnquist (0-1), a product of Columbus High School, was credited with one earned run on one hit with two walks and three K's in his 1.2 innings as he took the loss.
Madison College bats produced three hits, took two walks, and struck out 11 times. The hits came from
Nick Gile,
Carson Holin, and
Matt Miller, with Gile's base knock following a SCC error on
Cam Cratic ground ball to put two runners on with nobody out in the top of the seventh. The WolfPack's best scoring opportunity fizzled out with a double play off a bunt and a strikeout swinging.
Game #2: Scottsdale Community College 1, #15 Madison College 0 (7 innings)
In a bit of deja vu, game two played out nearly identical fashion, with both teams struggling to get hits and produce base runners until the final stages of the game.
Patrick Foldy, a righthander from Colgate, Wisconsin, controlled the game with an impressive collegiate debut. The former Sussex Hamilton High School athlete struck out eight batters and walked two as part of a no-hitter through six innings. A leadoff single in the seventh ended the no-hit bid and the WolfPack's third error of the game moved the runner to second. After a fly ball out to right allowed the runner to tag up and advance to third, the Artichokes walked off for the second time with a run-scoring grounder through the left side.
Foldy (0-1) took his first loss despite holding Scottsdale Community College to one unearned run on two hits in 6.2 innings.
Three Artichokes pitchers combined on a one-hitter that was accompanied by one walk and eight strikeouts. The lone base knock came on a come-backer up the middle to leadoff the fourth inning by second year centerfielder
Carl Valk, but was followed by ground ball double play.
