Early deficit too much for WolfPack in NJCAA District Semifinal loss

Region IV champs fall two wins shy of second national tournament appearance

BLAINE, MINN. - For the second time in three years, the Madison College women's soccer team saw their dreams of a national championship thwarted by Delta College, who defeated the WolfPack by a 4-0 final Saturday in the NJCAA Great Lakes District Semifinal. The undefeated Pioneers, who took a 1-0 contest in the opening round of the 2017 NJCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship against the 'Pack, tallied three of their four goals in the first 20 minutes of a matchup between two teams ranked in the NJCAA Division III Poll. Madison College finishes the season with a 12-4-2 record and with championships in both the North Central Community College Conference and Region IV.

Last year's national runners-up struck early with a goal just two-and-a-half minutes, and then got to sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Kubicek for two more in the span of 17 seconds during the 20' to make it 3-0. They added a final goal in the 51'.

Madison College was held without a shot in the first half, and was unable to find the net with any of their four second half shots, three of which were on goal. The Pioneers (16-0), meanwhile, kept the pressure on Kubicek and the WolfPack defense with 28 total shots and 16 shots on goal. Kubicek was credited with ten saves in the match, marking the fourth outing this season in which she reached double-digit saves.

Second year players Jenna Kohrt and Anna Cappaert each attempted two shots, with Kohrt putting both on the Delta College 'keeper.

Delta College, which reached the district tournament by claiming the Region XII title, went on to defeat host and Region XIII winner Anoka-Ramsey Community College by a 3-1 count to advance to the 2019 NJCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships in Dryden, New York, on November 14-17.
