JOLIET, ILL. - Freshman
Aniah Williams turned in the single greatest scoring game in Madison College women's basketball history, and the WolfPack needed every single point of it as part of a 95-93 overtime win over Joliet Junior College on Saturday. Williams, a native of Beloit, Wisconsin, becomes the first female in the history of Madison College to reach 40 points, as she did on her way to 41 points against the Wolves, who were receiving votes in the latest
NJCAA Division III Poll. The 'Pack has won two in a row and four of their last five after starting North Central Community College Conference play 0-2, including a
12-point setback to JJC in early January. They now sit tied for third in the N4C standings with Joliet.
Williams drained 14 of 28 shots, including 3 of 7 from beyond the arc, and converted 10 of 13 free throws en route to her 41 points. The 5'8" guard set or matched career-high's for field goals made and taken, as well as free throws made and taken. She surpasses the previous program record of 39 points set by Chelsi Mersberger (Stoughton, WI) in November 2004 and tied by all-time leading scorer Rachel Slaney (Barneveld, WI) in November 2016. Williams, who is now averaging 22.0 points per game to rank in the top 15 in the nation, also finished with eight rebounds, four steals, two assists, and a block. Her average increases to 29.0 a contest in league play.
A high-scoring first quarter ended with Joliet Junior College (13-9, 4-3) owning a 31-21 advantage, however, Madison College stormed back in the second quarter to outscore the Wolves by 13 and lead 47-44 at the break. That storyline repeated in the second half with the home team controlling the third quarter to assume a 68-62 edge heading into the fourth quarter. The 'Pack battled back to even with a 22-16 differential in the final ten minutes to force overtime, where the visitors narrowly escaped with a two-point victory. The 'Pack sits atop the all-time series by an 19-13 count and have taken five of the last seven meetings.
Sophomore
Shaquita Lee tallied 25 points for her fourth 20-plus contest in seven games played. The transfer from Sauk Valley Community College made nine baskets and seven free throws, to go along with nine rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
Second year players
Tianna Sackett and
Caitlyn Gilbertson added 13 and 10 points, respectively, as each posted double-figures for the second straight game. Sackett also amassed three assists. Freshman
Mary Raemisch, who played in her fourth game since joining the team at semester following her first season with the Madison College women's soccer team, grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds, dished out three assists, and scored four points.
As a team, the WolfPack shot 46% (36-78) overall with three triples and a 20 for 30 (67%) effort at the line. Joliet connected on 35% (37-105) from the field with five 3-pointers and made 14 of 20 (70%) at the charity stripe. The Wolves owned a 50-37 edge on the boards, including 25 offensive rebounds that led to a 21-14 lead in second chance points, and were also four points better off turnovers. The game featured six lead changes and 16 ties.

Madison College (14-7, 4-3) was scheduled to play at home for the first time in more than two weeks against #4 Rock Valley College (16-5, 7-0) on Wednesday, January 30, but the game has been postponed to Monday, February 11 due to severe cold temperatures in the forecast. The WolfPack will play Saturday, February 2 at Harper College (2-21, 1-5), whom they defeated
82-53 earlier this month for their first N4C win of the season. The victory improved the 'Pack to 15-2 all-time record and a 13-game win streak against the Hawks. Tip off in Palatine, Illinois, is at 1:00 p.m.
