GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The Madison College women's volleyball team used a balanced offensive and defensive game plan to defeat the College of DuPage in four sets Thursday to remain unbeaten atop the North Central Community College Conference standings. Avoiding a potential trap ahead of a pair of top ten matches next week, the #6 WolfPack broke a one set a piece tie to claim the four-set win by scores of 25-22, 25-27, 25-13, 25-22. The win marked the 28th consecutive over COD, a streak that dates back to 2006.
The tightly contest match finished with Madison College posting a 41-35 advantage in kills, while also hitting at a more efficient clip with a .218 attack percentage compared to .106 for the Chaparrals. The two teams combined to record 29 aces, led by the 16 for the 'Pack, a number they have reached on three occasions this season and now twice against DuPage.
Two WolfPack hitters reach double-digit kills in the match, led by sophomore outside
Paige Hostetler, whose 20 kills marks her second highest total of the season. The all-conference returnee was set up 44 times and finished with a .318 attack percentage, while also serving up a match-high six aces to equal a career-high.
First-year hitter
Isabella Carrillo tallied 10 kills on a team-leading .333 efficiency. Carrillo, a native of Hartford, Wisconsin, posted her second career double-digit kills effort, and also was big at the net defensively with a team-high three blocks. Fellow freshman
Tianna Sackett added seven kills as the trio accounted for 90% of the WolfPack offense.Â
Second-year setter
Olivia Darkow reached her fourth-highest assists total for the year with 34, to go along with four aces. And the sophomore back row tandem of
Maddie Scalissi and
Paige Alsum split 26 total digs evenly to lead the defensive effort against the Chaparral attack.
Down six late in the first set, Madison College closed with a 10-1 kick that was ignited by three consecutive Carrillo kills and ended with four straight DuPage (5-11, 2-3) attack errors. After COD outlasted the 'Pack in a back-and-forth second set, the visitors maintained a five or six point lead through much of the third set before scoring eight of the final ten points. The fourth and final set saw an early seven-point rally for the WolfPack to secure enough cushion for a narrow three-point win despite the home team scoring five straight to pull within 23-22.
