GLEN ELLYN, IL - Looking to rebound from a pair of losses the day before, the Madison College softball team rebounded in a big way with a sweep of the College of DuPage on Wednesday with both wins coming in run-rule fashion. The
#13 WolfPack used back-to-back four-run innings to break open game one for an 11-1 win in five innings, then followed sophomore
Mackenzie Terrill's right arm to a 10-0 victory in five innings highlighted by a one-hitter. The two wins push Madison College's win streak over the Chaparrals to five straight and keep the 'Pack one game behind Rock Valley College in the North Central Community College Conference standings.
Game #1: #13 Madison College 11, College of DuPage 1 (5 innings)
After each team scored a run in the first inning, Madison College pulled away with eight runs over the next two innings to take a commanding lead. In the second inning,
Paige Cornelissen,
Sam Schloegl, and
Claire Brzenk hit three consecutive run-producing extra base hits before a single out was recorded. Then in the third it was everything after two as Cornelissen, Brzenk, and
Hannah Grahl each doubled in a run, with Brzenk's pushing a pair of runs across home plate. Yet another extra base hit, this time a triple off the bat of
Ashley Kniesel, made it 10-1, and
Brittany Bredemann followed with a successful sacrifice fly to score Kniesel for the game's final run.
Four different players enjoyed multi-hit games for the WolfPack, who outhit COD by an 11-3 margin and produced seven extra base hits. Brzenk, a product of Arrowhead HS, went a team-best 3 for 4 with two doubles and established a new season-high with three runs batted in. She also scored two runs. Schloegl, a native of Wilmot, Wisconsin, was a perfect 2 for 2 with a team-high three runs scored and one driven in. Cornelissen enjoyed a 2 for 3 effort, including a double and a triple, with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. And Grahl used her two hits to bring home two more runs.
Sophomore
Emily Wiederholt (4-3) picked up her first win in the month of April with five strong innings that consisted of one earned run on three hits and one walk. The Cuby City, Wisconsin, native struck out eight batters, one shy of matching her career high.
Game #2: #13 Madison College 10, College of DuPage 0 (5 innings)
It came in the third inning on a ground ball single through the right side of the infield. That was the only base hit allowed by sophomore
Mackenzie Terrill (6-0) as she kept the College of DuPage (10-14, 4-8) bats in check for five innings. Aside from the one hit, the Milton, Wisconsin, native scattered four walks and struck out four batters to keep her perfect record in tact. Terrill has wins in each of her four games started in 2018.
Terrill enjoyed the benefit of early run support with the WolfPack scoring two runs in each of the first two innings.Â
Hannah Grahl and
Ali Braddock picked up RBI's in the first inning, as did
Paige Cornelissen and Grahl again in the second. Still holding a four-run lead into the fourth inning, Madison College again received key hits from the freshmen tandem of Cornelissen and Grah, with the former ripping a two-run triple down the left field line and the latter crushed a three-bagger to center to allow Cornelissen to score. The final runs were tallied in the fifth, starting with a RBI triple from first year catcher
Nicole Ferch, who then scored on an error by the third baseman on the play. Grahl completed the offensive effort with a run-producing bloop single to center that plated fellow freshman
Maegan Brookins.
Madison College finished with three triples en route to a dozen hits, led by five players with at least two base knocks. Cornelissen, a native of Wrightstown, Wisconsin, was 3 for 3 with three runs batted in and two scored, setting new season-high marks for hits and RBI in a game. Grahl, who won three WIAA State Championships at Laconia HS, posted two hits and a matched a career-best with four runs driven in. Brookins,
Dany Gumz, and Ferch also had two-hit games, with Brookins scoring a team-high three runs.
The WolfPack have won ten of last 12 against COD.
