MADISON, WISC. - Freshman
Jarrett Scheelk took advantage of the winds blowing out to left field on Thursday, crushing three home runs in the opener of a doubleheader as Madison College baseball swept it's newest in-state opponent, Bryant & Stratton College, at
Robin Roberts Field. Two days after playing the 100th game against Milwaukee Area Technical College, the WolfPack squared off with the Bobcats for the first time in program history and secured a 12-2 win in six innings and a 14-4 decision in five innings, with both ending in walk-off fashion. With the wins, the 'Pack is above .500 for the first time all season with a 13-11 record overall.
Game #1: Madison College 12, Bryant & Stratton College 2 (6 innings)
Scheelk made his presence known in his first at-bat of the day, powering a two-out, three-run homer to left to give Madison College a 4-0 lead after sophomore
Logan Michaels had doubled in
Garrett McGraw three batters prior. For Scheelk, his first collegiate homer was just the beginning of a monster afternoon. The WolfPack added four more runs in the third with
Jon-Anthony Caban, Caleb Hurts, and
Cam Cratic all picking up RBI base hits. Scheelk's next big swing came in the fourth, a no-doubt solo shot down the left field line that pushed the score to 9-2. Two innings later, he followed with another solo bomb, this one ricocheting half-way up the light pole in left-center field, making the Green Bay, Wisconsin, native one of three players in program history to hit three long balls in one game. He joins Brent Kakwitch from 2010 and
Cade Bunnell, who accomplished the feat last spring against Sauk Valley College on May 7 at Robin Roberts Field.
The game was not over yet, but after
Tanner Umentum scored on a wild pitch, freshman
Marquis Reuter ended the game with a walk-off single to center that scored Hurt and gave the 'Pack a run-rule win.
Scheelk's finished 3 for 4 at the plate and matched his career-high with five runs batted in while scoring a career-best four runs. McGraw, a Lodi, Wisconsin, product, was a perfect 4 for 4 to lead the WolfPack hit parade with the home team outhitting the Bobcats 16-5. Three other players had two hits days, with
Cam Cratic driving in three runs, Umentum scoring twice, and Hurt posting two runs scored and one batted in.
On the hill, sophomore
Connor Fedders (1-1) battled through a rough stretch in the second and third innings to pick up his first win of the season. The former Union Grove HS athlete surrendered one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters in his four innings of work. Freshman
Troy Hickey tossed the final two innings of scoreless ball with just one hit allowed and picking up three K's.
Game #2: Madison College 14, Bryant & Stratton College 4 (5 innings)
Game two picked up right where the opener left off, with some instant power. This time freshman
Carl Valk carried the heavy lumber as he led off the game with a solo shot to right for the early lead. Madison College then scored ten runs over the next two innings, thanks in large part to heavily walked path from home plate to first base. In the four-run second, the WolfPack took three walks and three hit by pitches, and in the six-run third, added five more walks. Valk,
Nick Gile, and Scheelk took advantage of bounty of baserunners and each added a run-scoring double in the bottom of the third.
Despite running into trouble in the fourth and giving up four runs to Bryant & Stratton College (1-9, 1-5 in Region IV), the 'Pack closed out the game in the fifth with a three-spot. After a walk to
Lucas Trebian,
Chase Scharnek drove in the first run, and following another hit by pitch that loaded the bases, first year infielder
Marquis Reuter ended the game with a single to left that scored Scharnek and
Jordan Olson for a second consecutive walk-off victory via the run rule.
Madison College finished the game with 11 walks, 11 hits, and four hit batters. Valk, who long ball was the first homer of his career, ended with a 2 for 2 effort, three RBI, and two runs scored.Gile and Scheelk both had a pair of base knocks, two runs batted in, and one scored. Scheelk has registered at least one hit in each of the last five games he has played, during which he has batted .556 (10-18) with 14 RBI and eight runs scored, all season-high's. Trebian, an alum of Madison La Follette HS, did not register a single at bat after taking four walks, leading to a team-best three runs scored.
Freshman
Trentin Uttech (1-0) started the game and earned his first collegiate win by holding the Bobcats scoreless through three innings and allowing just two hits. The righthander from Lake Mills, Wisconsin, struck out four and walked three. Fellow first year
Nolan Rebernick gave up four runs, two of which were earned, on three hits and two walks. He also struck out a pair in his two innings.
