FINISHING KICK: WolfPack dominate fourth quarter, push win streak to six straight

Road win over Elgin featured career-high for Williams, double-double by Strahm

ELGIN, ILL. - An impressive fourth quarter at both ends of the floor allowed the Madison College women's basketball team to reach six consecutive games on their current win streak as they defeated Region IV foe Elgin Community College 66-59 on the road Saturday. The WolfPack owned the final period by a 17-4 margin and used an 11-0 run that started in the third to erase a nine-point deficit and propel them to their fourth straight victory over the Spartans. Head coach Lois Heeren was unable to travel with the team, so longtime Madison College assistant Mike Mayfield earned his first collegiate win as a head coach.

Madison College led for nearly all of the first quarter until an Elgin (8-3) three-ball in the last minute gave the home team a 13-12 lead entering the second quarter. Trailing by six with less than six minutes to play in the half, the 'Pack put together a 10-2 run to grab the lead, which they owned by a 32-31 margin at the half. The third quarter saw both teams go on significant scoring runs, with the Spartans going on top with a 10-2 surge to open the half and Madison answering with a 10-3 push before ECC took a 55-49 edge into the final quarter. However, freshman Aniah Williams went on a personal seven-point rally from the third to the fourth quarters as the WolfPack seized control of the game. with 11 consecutive points. Williams, who scored ten points in the final quarter, kick-started the final six-point run to close the game for the 'Pack with her lone triple of the day.

The Beloit, Wisconsin, native finished with a career-best 27 points and scored 19 of the points in the second half. The 5'8" guard made 9 of 18 shots and went 8 for 12 at the free throw line. Williams also tallied six rebounds and two steals.

Two other freshmen scored in double-figures, with Evonne Strahm contributing 18 points off the bench and Jayla Conner tacking on ten points. Strahm, who had started the previous six games, converted 6 of 14 field goal attempts and 6 of 8 free throws, while also grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year and second in a row. The former Barneveld High School athlete led the 'Pack with five steals. Connor struggled to a 4 for 12 effort with two free throws, and also secured five boards, four steals, and dished out a team-leading three assists.

Overall, the WolfPack shot 39.3% (24-61) and made just one of 13 tries from long range for 7.7%. Elgin shot worse overall at 34.8% (24-69), but did make 6 of 26 (23.1%) from beyond the arc. At the charity stripe, Madison College made a dozen more free throws while attempting 19 more than the home team. The guests also dominated the interior, winning the battle on the boards by a 54-30 margin that included 20 offensive rebounds, and led to an 18-7 edge in second chance points and a 38-26 differential in points in the paint. The Spartans took advantage of 24 WolfPack turnovers to score a 22-7 lead in points off turnovers.

Madison College (6-3) returns home to begin a three-game homestand, all against in-state opponents, starting on Wednesday, December 5 when Western Technical College (4-2) comes to H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Though no longer in the same conference or region, the two programs have continued a rivalry that dates back to 1978. The all-time series is the most played of any in WolfPack history, with Madison College owning a 74-21 lead in the prior 95 meetings, which includes four-straight wins. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
