MADISON, WISC. - The combination of full-court pressure and some red-hot shooting in the first quarter propelled the Madison College women's basketball team to its biggest single quarter of the season, and ultimately a resounding 78-33 win over in-state foe UW-Waukesha on Monday inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack connected on a season-high ten 3-pointers, seven of which came in the opening ten minutes as the home team raced out to a 35-7 advantage. The fifth straight win over the Cougars gives the 'Pack a 32-13 lead in the all-time series with their in-state foe, and moves Madison College to 3-0 against Wisconsin-based teams so far this season.
The WolfPack opened the game by making their first five attempted three-pointers, eventually converting 7 of 9 in the quarter. Mixing in some full-court pressure helped force seven turnovers that turned into eight points, while also creating a tempo that translated into numerous fast break opportunities off of defensive rebounds. Freshman
Tyra Day added another triple to start the second quarter, which opened with an 11-0 run. The first half lead bloomed to 41 points before settling at 53-17 at the half. Madison College eased off the pressure and slowed the tempo in the second half, yet still grew the lead to a peak of 47 right before finalizing the win by holding Waukesha to the fewest points scored by an opponent this season.
The evening proved to be the best shooting night of the year for the WolfPack, who went 33 for 68 to post a shooting percentage of 48.5% for their fifth game in the last sixth played with better than 41% shooting. Madison College torched the nets from long-range with a 10 for 18 (55.6%) effort for their first double-digit three-point performance of the season. The home team also held UW-Waukesha (1-6) to percentages of 23% (14-61) from the field and 14.3% (3-21) beyond the arc. It all aided in boosting their current win streak to eight games, the longest such streak in three years.
