High-scoring Highland hands WolfPack women a second loss

Four Madison College players reach double-digit points

FREEPORT, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team demonstrated much more offensive firepower in their second game of the season, scoring nearly 30 more points that in the season opener, however, it was not enough in a 101-70 loss at NJCAA Division I Highland Community College on Saturday. Four WolfPack players scored in double-figures as they tried to keep pace with the Cougars, who outscored the visitors in every quarter to send the 'Pack to their second consecutive 0-2 start.

Highland Community College (1-1) allowed 32 points in the game's first ten minutes, and trailed 53-35 at the half. The Cougars shot 50% from the field and beyond the arc, while the 'Pack posted a 28.7% (29-101) mark overall and a 3 for 17 effort from long range. Madison College struggled to control the basketball, turning it over a 26 times compared to just ten for the home team.

Freshman forward Evonne Strahm came off the bench to lead the WolfPack in scoring with 19 points on 6 of 22 shooting. The former Barneveld HS athlete converted 7 of 8 free throws and snared ten rebounds - seven on the offensive end - for her first career double-double. Fellow first year Aniah Williams followed up her impressive start to the season with 18 points as she made seven of 21 attempts overall and three 3-pointers. The Beloit, Wisconsin, native also accumulated three rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block.

Forward Jayla Connor and guard Tianna Sackett rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Connor, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, made five field goals and 4 of 7 free throws, while also securing four rebounds and blocking a team-high four shots. Sackett, fresh off an all-region volleyball season for Madison College, contributed five baskets and one free throw, to go along with a season-high nine rebounds.

Four other players also scored for the 'Pack, who now trail HCC by a 17-16 margin in the all-time series that dates back to 1979.
