MADISON, WISC. - A frenetic game was decided by a 26-13 closing run by the Madison College women's basketball team as they ran past in-state foe Bryant & Stratton College by a 100-94 final Wednesday night at
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack reached the century mark for the first time in two years, thanks in large part to
Evonne Strahm's 33 points, which ties the freshman for the eighth highest scoring game in program history. The high-scoring win extends the team's current win streak to five straight after starting the season 0-3, while also giving the 'Pack a 2-1 lead in the short all-time series with the Bobcats.
Facing the 20th-ranked team in the
NJCAA Division II Poll, Madison College came out of the gates firing on all cylinders with a 13-3 run that included six points from Strahm and five from fellow first year
Jayla Connor. The WolfPack owned a 28-23 lead at the end of the first quarter, and extended that advantage to 36-23 by scoring the first eight points of the second quarter. When the first half ended, the home team still owned an eight point edge at 47-39 and Strahm had racked up 21 points. The third quarter, however, was a whole different story as Bryant & Stratton (5-3) outscored the home team by a 29-18 margin to take the lead. An 8-0 run closed the gap to 51-47 and a 7-0 burst a few minutes later gave the visitors a 56-55 lead with less than four minutes to play in the quarter.
Staring at an 81-74 deficit with more than seven minutes remaining and looking exhausted from the game's up-and-down tempo, the 'Pack dug deep for their final kick to claim the victory. It started with a Strahm basket and was followed by a three-pointer from
Aniah Williams, whose layup near the four-minute mark remaining in the game gave Madison College the lead for good.
Strahm, a native of New Glarus, Wisconsin, was 13 of 21 from the field and 7 for 13 at the free throw line to become just the sixth player in school history to reach 33 points in a single game. She completed her evening with a career-high 15 rebounds for her third double-double of the year, while also leading the 'Pack with five steals. The 5'10" forward has led the WolfPack in scoring on four occasions and has produced double-digit scoring in five straight games.
Not far behind in the points category was freshman
Jayla Connor, who established her won new career-high with 25 points on 10 of 20 shooting with one 3-pointer and a 4 for 5 mark at the free throw line. Connor, a 5'11" product of Madison East High School, fell a rebound shy of her second double-double, while also dishing out a team-leading four assists and grabbing four steals. Connor currently boasts a four-game streak of double-digit scoring.
Williams and
Tianna Sackett also made significant scoring contributions with 18 and 15 points, respectively. For Sackett, it marked a new career-high in points, while Williams pushed her consecutive games with ten or more points streak to eight straight before fouling out with a little more than two minutes remaining.
Madison College converted just 3 of 11 (27.3%) from outside the arc, but did manage to shoot 48.1% (38-79) overall and 58.3% (21-36) at the free throw line. The Bobcats made 4 of 22 (18.2%) from long rage, 35 of 95 (36.8%) overall, and 20 for 26 (77%) at the stripe. The home team owned a 58-46 lead in interior scoring, while Bryant & Stratton narrowly owned points off turnovers (26-23) and second chance points (21-15). The two teams combined for 45 turnovers.
