Dejesus Herrera breaks season scoring record in Sophomore Night win

Forward's two goals, Griffin hat trick lead WolfPack to 7-2 win over Stormers in home finale

MADISON, WISC. - Playing in the final regular season home match at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, the Madison College men's soccer team's sophomore class demonstrated how to finish in style with six goals and four assists as part of a 7-2 win over North Central Community College Conference rival Milwaukee Area Technical College on Friday. The scoring effort was highlighted by a record-breaking performance as Dejesus Herrera netted two first half goals to become the new single season goals scored record holder with 20. The WolfPack have now won 14 straight games over the Stormers and are 44-15-2 all-time.

Herrera, a former Madison West HS athlete and transfer from NCAA Division II University of Charleston (WV), began the game's scoring in the 13' with a conversion off a pass from fellow sophomore Will Hamilton that tied the previous record held by Witi Montes since 1981. Two minutes later, Hamilton again set up one of his classmates as Brandon Griffin made it 2-0. Then in the 17', Herrera and Hamilton worked together again to make history. After some nifty footwork by Hamilton, Herrera found himself with an open net and an easy goal for his 20th of the season, placing himself alone atop the list of single season goal scorers in program history. He reached the record setting total in a dozen games, eight of which he has scored multiple times.

Milwaukee Area Technical College (2-8-1, 1-6) closed the gap to two goals with their first score in the 27' against starting goalkeeper Msughter Abel Dzoho, but the WolfPack answered in the 34' when Fabian Perez became the third second-year player to tally a goal. Just before the end of the half, the Stormers struck again with a goal just over the outstretched arms of Dzoho to trim the WolfPack lead to 4-2 at the break.

Madison College wasted little time in the second half asserting their dominance in the match. As rain started to fall, Griffin converted a Jonas Luskey-Sanders pass just 43 seconds into the action. Luskey-Sanders then registered his second goal of the year two minutes later to extend the lead to four goals. Before the match ended, Griffin and Herrera added to their nightly totals in the 55'. Herrera drew in a couple of defenders before finding an open Griffin, who converted for his second hat trick of the season. The Tucker, Georgia, native boasts 11 goals and 24 points on the season. Herrera's five-point night pushed his season total to a team-leading 45, six points shy of that single season record.

Madison College posted a 26-8 advantage in total shots and an 18-6 edge in shots on goal. Dzoho finished with one save and two goals allowed in the first half, while fellow freshman Saxon LaFlash kept MATC-Milwaukee out of the net with a pair of saves in the second half.

The win ends the WolfPack's regular season home schedule with a record of 4-2-1.
