PALATINE, ILL. - For the third consecutive season, the Madison College women's volleyball team saw their season end Saturday at the hands of Harper College in a 3-1 NJCAA Region IV Division III Tournament Semifinal setback that also ended a streak of five consecutive appearances in the championship match. The second-seeded WolfPack looked sharp early with a 25-21 win in the opening set, however, the third-seeded Hawks dominated the rest of the match with set wins of 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 to close the season with a 16-12 record for coach Jeff "J.T." Thomas and company.
Madison College produced 14 kills and a .171 attack percentage in the first set, but fell short of Harper (23-13) in total kills for the match by a 49-37 tally and surrendered a .200 percentage. The Hawks also outplayed the 'Pack defensively, racking up a dozen blocks and 91 digs to just four blocks and 69 digs for Madison. The WolfPack finished with a .074 efficiency, its lowest in a match since posting two worst percentages on September 7.
Sophomore
Paige Hostetler paced the WolfPack with 15 kills on 60 attempts for a .100 attack percentage. The Green Bay, Wisconsin, native finishes the season with a school-record 443 kills to rank second in the nation. Her 695 career kills will also stand as a program record. Hostetler completed her final match with her eighth double-double, adding 11 digs and a team-best three aces to her statline.
Freshman
Isabella Carrillo reached double-figures in kills for the sixth time this season with ten, doing so on a .179 attack percentage. Fellow first year
Tianna Sackett added eight kills, while setter
Olivia Darkow added three and
Zoe Rathsack had one.
Darkow, a native of West Bend, Wisconsin, had 29 assists to reach 873 for the season and 1,255 for her career, both of which place her in the top ten of both lists in program history. The sophomore's 13 digs contributed to an eighth double-double. For just the fourth time this season, she failed to serve an ace, but will still leave the college with the single-season and all-time records.
Defensively, sophomore libero
Maddie Scalissi was tops with 18 digs to tally 364 on the year, and will leave Madison College among the top five all-time in that category with 783. Second year defensive specialist
Paige Alsum had ten digs and two aces
The 2018 season marks the end of a 13-year streak of 20-win seasons. Madison College is now 3-4 in postseason play against Harper College, which evened the all-time series at 17-17 win the decision and taking two of three meetings this fall.
