MADISON, WISC. - Sophomore
Dejesus Herrera single-handedly saved the day - and the season - for the Madison College men's soccer team, accounting for both scores in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Joliet Junior College in the NJCAA Region IV Division III Quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The two goals in the final ten minutes, including the game winner in the final minutes, advanced the third-seeded WolfPack past the sixth-seed Wolves and into the Region IV Semifinals for a fourth consecutive season.
Herrera's first goal tied the match at one-all in the 81' as he converted off a pass from fellow second year
Donovan Brendler. Facing the thought of a second consecutive home match against JJC going into overtime, the Madison College record holder for most goals in a single season made sure that didn't happen. With less than 100 seconds left in the match, Herrera, a Madison, Wisconsin, native, ripped his fifth game-winner - and 23rd goal overall - of the season. Freshman
Abel Araya picked up an assist on the final shot attempted in the game.
Visiting Joliet Junior College (4-8-2) delivered the game's first blow with a 6' goal off a corner kick that got by freshman goalkeeper
Saxon LaFlash. The Wolves continued to put pressure on and seemed to be in control of the match through halftime and much of the second half.
The action grew more competitive as each minute went by, resulting in five yellow cards over a 26-minute span. The score remained 1-0 as the game clock ticked into the 80' and sent Madison College into further desperation.
LaFlash, another native of Madison, Wisconsin, played all 90 minutes without making a save, allowing a goal on the only official shot on goal taken by Joliet.
It's the first postseason win in three tries against the Wolves and the sixth win in the last nine meetings in the head-to-head series. The WolfPack posted a 2-0-1 mark against JJC in 2018.
